      For the steering,keep the rod as straight as possible with no drastic bends.Check that the throw is smooth and doesn't bind up.

              Do you have a small boot or something for the rod to pass thru the transom for sealing? You may want to look at getting one.

                  Once you are getting close to I can't stress how important it is to do a bathtub test better to know before going to the pond and losing the whole thing to a small leak lol

                          What does the boot look like. I might use a small piece left over from that stuffing tube and make the hole and seal that piece of tube to the hole that way it gives you something to clamp the boot onto for the rod to pass thru.

                            You can drill a small hole through the transom in line with the arm of the rudder.There is a hole for a rod or linkage to go through on the rudder right.
