I would think an extra 1/4 to 3/8 should do it as you can have the brass stuffing tube sticking out of the transom till it mates with the nose of the strut. If it is not fully locked into the strut you should have some adjusting room.Does this make sense to you? And how tight does the brass fit into the nose piece?
It barely fits. Very tight fit...

The front of the strut. It tapers down and the brass tube with teflon liner fits in it.

That's OK.So you should drill your hole for the tube in the transom.Drill a pilot hole first. Then you can put the tube in the nose and decide where the stand off mounts to the transom, and the distance.I guess you could mount the strut to the stand off.

The strut is mounted to the stand off. I have a small drill bit to start a pilot hole and i will get up to what size?

Turn your boat upside down and place the stand off and strut against the transom(where it belongs) tightly, then look at the strut and see if it is straight down the length of the boat.A straight edge will help.

I wanna say center. This is why some use the wet well.So you can adjust the strut up and down.I just looked a couple of mine over and you should be fine at center.
