Paint prep. I signed out the paint booth for tomorrow morning. We'll see how she goes. Going to try a different gun this time.

People were asking about how I paint things (I'm not a painter, but I've had some mild success). At this point I've brushed it, vacuumed it, hit it with air, and cleaned it with acetone two times. I will clean once more with KlassKote reducer when I get to the shop.

Going to use the forum to think through the paint application. Oh, and one of these things on the turn fin mount (photo) works good for hooking and maneuvering while painting.

Believe it or not, there is actually a method to the madness to avoid overspray on finished surfaces:
        1. Spray transom.
        2. Spray front and tips of sponsons.
        3. Spray backs of sponsons.
        4. Spray sides.
        5. Spray bottom.
        6. Spray top.

To sum it up, the entire operation is an absolute pain in the a$$.

No clue yet on the scheme. I was actually thinking about sending the original black one down to you to live with it's big brother.

I'm still waiting on some decent weather on my days off down here to get big brother wet. Always seems to be raining. Finally picked up an esc for it..I'm trying to pickup boats for different classes so when I make trips I can run more than just one or two.

Adding a tad more than recommended reducer to paint will help reduce overspray. Spray a medium tack coat on first coat to prevent runs on finish coat.

This is how I hung boat using woodscrew in nose. I added long screws in transom to turn hull by hand while painting. Paint booth helps, but not really needed...bugs, dust, hair and other debrie can be color sanded out later.

Chris - I've been making all of my fins and brackets lately. Took me awhile to figure out what worked, but I think I got it down now.

D - That yellow boat looks beautiful. If I remember, you were using two part automotive paint, correct?

Both boats are in primer. I tried this new cheapo harbor freight detailing gun (0.6mm), @ 40psi. Using Klasskote, I mixed 1:1:1 (part A: part B: reducer). Turned out good. I'm happy with the new gun. It's a challenge to get a 'wet' coat on with the reduced flow of the 0.6mm, but it's far less waste than the bigger gun. I'm going to stick with it for the next coat. A lot of sanding to do.

BTW, here is the ludicrous conglomeration of $hit that you need to paint. Counting the 2 hours of prep Thurs night, the taping, the driving to the shop, the mixing, etc... it took 6 hours to get the first coat of primer on. Not for the un-patient. (and I still managed to fix a toilet and hang curtains today!)

LOL ok Pete, but that really didn't help me, Let me ask you this. What did you figure out works? And have you used the Insane FE30 fin?

The insane fin seemed a little small to me. Never tried it though, but I've heard they work well on the FE30. I've found that a consistent width fin (just as wide at the bottom as the top) with an aggressive curve towards the very bottom (not a gradual curve from midway down) works best. Oh, and it has to be as thin as possibleand sharpened with a gradual taper at least 3/4" into the blade. Just my experience. We played around with these last year (probably about 50+ runs with different fin designs).

Late aggressive hook on the fin seems to work good with what I've experienced. Depth and leading edge angle is also important. Experiment with it and you'll figure out what works. I've probably tried 5 or so different fins on my Whiplash

Thanx Pete, looks like I'll be makin' some fins, But I do have a FE30 fin coming. I bought a complete FE30 hardware kit.

I'm goin' through the same thing right now with my GP400, I think I've had 4 or 5 different ones on it so far. It seems to like a angled fin better than a curved fin.

Are you running 2 boats in P sport hydro? (why are you painting 2 hulls)
