Painting can be a real pita. The pin striping is a good tip. It can give a nice sharp edge but just be carefull not to rub it down too hard as I've had it lift paint as well. its looking good though from what I can see.
For masking thin lines on our rc race cars I bought a couple cheap rolls of different thickness pin stripe tape at the local car parts store. Worked great and can make some nice curves with it too.
+1 - I laid this out using 1/8" pinstriping from Autozone and rattle can.
My Kintec order came early so I did end up getting the 1/8" masking tape. I just applied the first layer on the deck, but the bottom is still hardening. (I rest the boat on the masking tape.) Pics to come.
The UL-1 strut does not hold the 1/4" brass tube tight. Is this normal? I'll just wrap it in tape or something.
Sorry to hear about the paint issues. Definitely a touchy process. It doesn't matter how much experience you have either.....everyone finds something not compatible or 'leaves residue' like yours, etc...
That vacu-boat is one of the best boats built IMO. I love mine. Solid as a rock. Phil Pace is a great guy too. Honestly, if he built something a little bigger for P-sport (whiplash size) I think it would be the go-to boat!
The electrical tape worked like a charm! It provided a much sharper line than the painter's tape. I simply sanded the red down a little. I did encounter other issues which you will see below.
My last layer of black decided it wanted to be a particle magnet...so I'll just sand that down when I go to clear it in the distant future. Till then, I really do not have an issue with it.
I've been working on the boat straight. I tried to finish the driveline, but ran out of time. The motor mount is in. The stuffing tube and liner are cut and bent. I need to tweak the bend though.
This is with a Traxxas VXL motor for reference. One thing I noticed when I had it bolted in was space. The VXL is a 3656 with a 40mm cap. I don't think a 3674 would fit with the prototype cowl. I have to check some other builds.
I accidentally ordered a 60mm water jacket. Which raises the motor about 3mm higher.
I do not have a significant update, but I did get the stuffing tube tacked in with a little silicone from underneath. Now I have to cut the flex shaft, but my access to tools are nearly zero here. I think I am just going to get a Leopard 3674 2200kv. I'm just waiting for my eBay auction winner to pay me for my airsoft gun.
I also forgot to drill the hole for the pushrod exit so I have to find some drill bits for that.
I no longer have my epoxy and fiberglass, but I still need to finish and secure my stuffing tube. Would it be ok if I used JB Weld? If so, I can just pick some up next time I past Home Depot.
JB is perfect you can use tape to outline a small area around the stuffing tube then remove it before it cures and it leaves nice clean edges. If you have more then a couple inches of tube length on the inside you should likely wanna use some sore of brace.
