I asked this same question in the Impulse race prep thread, how do the "square'ish" turn fins change the hull attitude in rougher water. The shockwave 26" mono from ProBoat tends to skip when making turns for me, would really like to settle that down some.

And Darin answered you in that old thread. A square fin has the same width from top to bottom. If you lift 40% of the fin out of the water, you lose 40% of the fin area in the water.

A tapered fin of the same length has variable width, widest at the top. If you lift 40% of the fin out of the water you may lose 70% of the fin area in the water. That means less resistance to sliding in turns. A square fin might help your boat, as might a longer one.

Sorry for the delays in keeping this updated... Lots has happened! I setup a paint both and got FOUR boat hull sets primed, painted, and cleared... Actually time to start reassembly. Started with the DYMotorshop hull... Here are some progress pics.

And, started doing the final assembly...

Quick shot of the bottom as well... Didn't want to paint the entire bottom, but wanted something that would be visible if upside down, so I sprayed a coating of the Polyester Primer on part of it. This will allow me to block out the bottom slightly, if needed, as well.

Really nice Darin, like what you did with leaving some of the carbon/kevlar exposed. Like the idea about the bottom of the hull as well.

Thanks... It's not by accident that the exposed Carbon areas are also the tape-down areas... Should help keep the paint in place, long-term.

Yes, and it depends on how you apply it... this is two or three pretty light coats over a pearl white base. About impossible to touch-up! :)

Yes I noticed it doesn't "pop" as well if it's not over a white base. I just prime with a bright white primer and then spray two coats of base, let dry for several days (water based) and then three coats of automotive clear. I not think mine would be too easy to touch up either.

Clear I used is PPG 2042... Two wet coats.

I did switch to a standard sized touch-up gun this time for the clear. The 1.2mm tip really made a nice difference in how the clear went on. Was using my 0.6mm "detail" guns, but it wasn't wetting out the finish that well.

I sprayed the color with the 0.6mm tips... Thinking I might try the 1.2mm next time for that as well.
