Removed the motor/mounts and prepping to laminate in the carbon motor-mount plates. They are just CA'd in place at the moment.

      20160601_194444.jpg

Salvaged this aluminum servo mounting setup from a test boat, so I cleaned it up and will use it on this boat. I machined a lip around the perimeter of the base I fabbed for it, which should allow the layup to capture the base better.

Servo is one of the new Spektrum S6230 Digital Hi-Torque. 311 oz-in (22.4kg-cm) @ 6.0V. Should get the job done nicely. Yes... I believe is severe overkill for servos. Many a poor handling boat can be tracked down to inadequate steering control.

Darin that servo is now my go to on almost everything. Is badass. And that's an understatement. Waterproof and not power hungry. It reminds me of a radio post at 60% the cost of one. It has no slack and the ones I'm running don't seem to be gaining slack like all the blue savox servos I used to run. It's also a little more low profile than a regular servo. Anyone looking for a nice higher end quiet servo, this is the one you need.

I love those servo mounts too. I've been making a carbon bottom plate that replaces the original that the side pieces screw into. It makes for a better bond and because I'm not using a bottom plate like you are, it looks funny glueing it down with glue coming through the screw holes. Your solution looks nice too. I like the machined bottom plate and gives a lot of grab area for the epoxy.

I THINK, if it looks practical when I get in there to bond this all together, than I may laminate the bottom plate as well. If I'm careful, I think I can do a carbon layer that just captures those edges, without protruding up onto the servo plate.

Because of where I mounted the motor (way back), space is REALLY limited in there, so fitting this all in without creating a total hassle getting the motor in/out is going to be a tad bit of a challenge, but we'll get it!

Working on getting the servo mounting system installed. Also preparing to laminate in the motor mount sides.

Also prepping the motor mount to get laminated in place. Sides are just tacked in with CA at the moment.

This is carbon weave with a thin layer of glass veil glued to it. Sill all laminate up black when finished.

Prepped the battery trays for installation this evening. They came (from OffshoreElectrics.com, of course) with only 4 base mounts. I wanted a little more security, so I fabbed some additional pieces and used them on the ends.

All parts were block sanded to scuff them up using 180 grit.

                    20160606_201224.jpg

Once these setup, I'll block sand the bases lightly and install into the hull.

This is looking good. Are you putting carbon cloth over your epoxy (like around the motor mount?)

Yes. If you look closely above, you'll see that I pre-installed a carbon-twill covered in veil cloth (1.5oz fine-weave glass) along the sides of the motor mount plates and over the servo mount. I then wet them out to laminate it all in place.

I wish I were a LITTLE more patient, because I think I could have installed the carbon a little more evenly, but honestly, it's NOT a show-boat... it's a race boat. I want it to be clean and hold together, so this should work fine.

I'm wondering if I might be overpowering this. I ordered a TP 4050 from OffshoreElectrics.com and it arrived yesterday. Freaking thing is a MONSTER! Glad I didn't follow my "more-more-more" twinge and order the 4060!

Here it is compared to the a sample Dynamite 4068 1750KV IM31 Motor...

A 4050 is what I'd use for this size hull so I think your good . I think the rtrs tend to have motors on the small size compared to what I like to have for some overhead. I like to have a little extra leeway. You'll be impressed with that motor if you haven't run one yet. They run quite well. I've slowing been swapping over to tp power here lately. And if you peel the rainbow sticker off the wire end on the motor, they are a very sexy looking motor.

I ran my first one on my P-OPC Tunnel at the 2-Lap in March... 3640-sized... totally unprecedented performance that weekend. Brian B. experienced the same with his P-Hydro! Seem to be a great value motor!

The latest iterations of tp motors are beasts. They are also building them better. 8mm shafts on the bigger motors. End caps screws on instead of glued.

The little 3650 I have (it's identical length and wattage to a 4050) is pushing my little 27" cat to 92 and I haven't even tried to go faster. It's too fast if there's a such thing but totally manageable and not violent. Very smooth motor which I'm sure is good for racing plus they don't seem to run hot. You'll be impressed with it.
