I was in process of making templates for my sponson heel doublers when I discovered something that somehow I had previously totally overlooked. The sponsons dont match, one is wider and of a different shape. I did contact David at Hyperprod. about this. His explanation is "this counteracts torque roll and the center is also offset for cornering" ok I understand this for a hydroplane running a course, but how is it going to help a straight line Drag boat. What's your thoughts on this. I was changing up too a twin, but if this truly would counteract torque roll off the line, I'd really like to build it as a single...

It is not unheard of to increase the drag of the left sponson to help the boat track straight, counteracting prop walk. This could be by increasing either the contact area or the deadrise.

You can also kick the motor over on an angle and off center to combat the 'roll'. I did that eons ago with my little 20" brushed rigger. It works/helps. In mono's too.

I know that I have been back and forth alot on this build far as going single or twin. Since Chris is going twin on his and from what the hull manufacturer and you guys are telling me, I have decided to go with a single. I'm going to start out using a Neu 1521 1577kv on 6S. Chris (dasboata) and I have already been talking about a special prop. This is going to be fun and interesting comparing results between Chris and I.

One of the issues these drag hulls have is keeping a straight line out of the hole, I have been looking at these dual rudder setups like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/aluminum-dua...item1e5d965008 i was thinking that maybe these would help in keeping it straight along with my twin turn fins...

That motor is marginal for the boat if you want maximum performance. Even oval boats this size use the larger 1527-sized motor. The smaller format motor will push the boat no doubt, but if you are worried about drag from rudder length you'd be better served with a more powerful motor.

Thanx DJ. Even on that boat, I thinned them a bunch and took about 1/2" off them (I think) they're plenty thick when you get them. I'm running a Leopard 5698 910kv on 10s in it and it's good for about 70mph.

Jay, your right, I was looking at what motors I had available in motor drawer. I do have a 1527 1500kv. I do have to admit that I was trying to keep from buying another motor, but a 1530 1300-1500kv would probably be more what I'm needing, another $300. I cant find any specs on that motor? anybody have them for me pls.

Chris, tks...I do think that those might help me some, I'll just do some machining on them.

DJ that 1527 1500kv would be badass on 8s! I've got one in a 36.5" Phil Thomas hydro on 6s and it flys, not a lot of punch out of the hole but that's probably the way I have it propped plus 8s will cure that too!

I have no doubts he will get back to you shortly. I was also looking at TP motors, never tried one of those yet. My buddy has one that he is using and it pushes his boat nicely. I was thinking the 4070 3Y 1440kv that one according to specs can run up too 10S and it does have a 8mm shaft. I have that 1527 in a GP400 I just finished, need to run it at least a couple of times before I canabalize it. I will probably end up selling that one eventually too, since I have lost interest in heat racing for now, (none even close to me, at least several hrs) . I been back forth a bit much on this build, need to make final choices and go with it.....

I am making a little progress, got my templates to a buddy who is going to make my sponson doublers for me out of aluminum, so I can drill and thread it for my turn fins. I got template for transom doubler made. I am going to use hardwood with a layer of cf over it. Once I drill it out for my hardware I will put blindnuts in to make hardware removal easier. First time I've tried this on a boat, did it all the time in my big rc plane builds. My local Ace hardware stocks a great bulk section of SS items, so no prob on getting longer bolts and ss blindnuts....

Dave Rippie is a nice guy. Many years ago like 35 or so, late eighties. I was new to racing in APBA and I always wore Birkenstock's. I had no closed toe shoes with me in L.A. and did not know I needed them to compete. They were not going to allow me to race in the first Wet and Wild race. Dave loaned me some rubber boots for the weekend. At that time he was retrieve boat captain and a nitro racer volunteering for that MRP electric race. He was only there for one day of the 3 day event. I was instructed to leave the boots with the CD on Sunday. I had never met him before that, he has always been special person to me. Thanks Dave for all your help over the years.
