Was out at the shop this afternoon. After fighting with the vacuum table for an hour, I switched to the smaller machine and just screwed the damn thing down. Turned out real nice.

Any idea as to what to coat MDF with prior to vacuum forming? I suppose I could ask Phil P.

Amazing what you can accomplish when you have an entire day off work! I sanded the bottom nose pc while the body of the cowl was machining (only 1.5 hours!). The cockpit was done prior. Sanded, sealed, and epoxy primed. I pulled a sample cockpit and nose pc. Decent, but they may require some small holes to improve the radii. Nobody said this stuff was easy!!!!!

BTW - They don't look like much, but A TON of thought went into those two bucks. If this wasn't a hobby, I'd have gone broke months ago. The heights are extended slightly to allow square edges when you cut them out, and drafts were added all over the place. Plus, the front leading edge of the boat had to be designed in so it will mate well. Absolutely crazy time into these. Late nights.

Thanks Chris. I still have a lot of work to do on the hatch. The fuselage is going to drop into a recess in the hatch buck. Couldn't think of any other way of machining it without removing a ton of material.

Worked on this a little this morning. I'm not going to glue these pcs together because they will be used as guides to cut out future parts. I cut the plastic out of the window on another one, put it behind a black background, and scanned it in for the window decal.

Man that looks like they fit really nice, the nose is nice and tucked too. You should get some slight aero effect (down force) from these and every little bit helps.

How are you going to lock the hatch down? Especially interested in the forward part of the hatch.

Pete, lets cut one from 1/32 ply for stringers and bulkheads. Then skin it with 1/32.

Jim - If you look in post 335, there is huge overhang on the bottom of the nose that goes underneath. One pc of tape should secure it further if need be. That's how I do it on my current boat.

Terry - At first I was thinking 'glue sniffer', then I thought........that would actually be a pretty cool experiment!! Maybe 1/16 for stringers though??

I'm planning on cutting the main hatch out tomorrow night from 6-10pm after work. Nothing like being sharp and alert while operating expensive equipment that could cut your arms off!

I am pretty sure right now everything is 1/8" right? I would stick with 1/16. I would also stick with 1/16 on the deck too. It would be too easy to put your finger though 1/32 in unsupported areas.

The thing is a tank right now, however that does have it's advantages. It will likely survive a longer life in a club racing environment the way it's constructed now. Just my 2 pennies...

Jim,

This boat is being run on FULL P power. If they were running it on spec power it would be more feasible (in my own opinion).
