The mounting foot measures 5/16" x 1/2" and the rudder blade measures 1/32" x 3/4" x 2 1/2". The rudder edge is 13/16" from the transom.

          Solinger Micro Rudder

          Yeeee-haaa!!!

I have some Solinger Micro Rudders on the way. I'm glad I did not drill the transom for the MHZ rudder just yet.

I'm still on my Soaring Safari vacation in the Sierras, so I will not be back to the shop for several days.

          Stay tuned.

I just got a note from Joe. Although the parts in his photo appear to be brass, it is actually aluminum with a spring steel rudder blade.

This guy does some gorgeous work!

I just received word from PayPal that Joe has charged my account for the rudders I ordered. I imagine they will be here soon, at which time I'll post more photos. The tentative first outing will be July 19th at the pond.

They shipped out on Saturday evening so you should have them tomorrow or Thursday. I'm realy looking forward to seeing how the whole system works together.

Me too. I am in "uncharted waters" so to speak, but I have high hopes for success. The only major potential issue I can see is the thrust angle on the prop. I've minimized it and I'm hoping to be able to adjust the balance point to compensate for the additional lift of the angled prop. Garry Finlay has had success with straight shafts and "modest" power systems in his 1/16 scale boats, I hope this project is on the same track.

                    If not, well.......

                      awesome build!

I just got around to reading what you have done so far.
It looks like its coming together very well.
That rudder looks excellent by the way!

                        Recent Progress

Here is another update on the MTH. Using some styrene sheet, I added a tapered shim to the transom in order to mount the rudder perpendicular to the water surface. Since this is a vacuum-formed hull, the transom has a “slope” to it in order to allow the part to be removed from the mold. Without this shim, rudder movement would not only turn the hull, but additionally impart a “downward” force at the transom. To see how this works, imagine the transom was at 45º to the vertical, and you turned the rudder 90º. You essentially have a scoop at the transom, pulling it down. Reducing the angles reduces the down force, but never eliminates it until the rudder is perpendicular to the water.

I have also added sheet styrene ride pads to the sponsons (quick and dirty) and built a turn fin from a scrap of aluminum angle and carbon fiber sheet.

Photos to follow when I get home from work tonight.

Here's a photo. The rest I took were just white-on-white. I'll take more when I mount my NEW Solinger Micro rudder that arrived in today's mail!

Got my Sloinger micro rudder also and I must say it is almost too pretty to put on a boat. Very nicely done Joe

                                Joe,

I'm curious. Did you use a saw or a REALLY TINY mill to cut the rudder slot? This is not a comment on the quality (outstanding), just for my edification.
