Solinger Micro Rudder
Yeeee-haaa!!!
I have some Solinger Micro Rudders on the way. I'm glad I did not drill the transom for the MHZ rudder just yet.
I'm still on my Soaring Safari vacation in the Sierras, so I will not be back to the shop for several days.
Stay tuned.A nation of sheep breeds a government of wolvesComment

I just got a note from Joe. Although the parts in his photo appear to be brass, it is actually aluminum with a spring steel rudder blade.

I just received word from PayPal that Joe has charged my account for the rudders I ordered. I imagine they will be here soon, at which time I'll post more photos. The tentative first outing will be July 19th at the pond.

Recent Progress
Here is another update on the MTH. Using some styrene sheet, I added a tapered shim to the transom in order to mount the rudder perpendicular to the water surface. Since this is a vacuum-formed hull, the transom has a “slope” to it in order to allow the part to be removed from the mold. Without this shim, rudder movement would not only turn the hull, but additionally impart a “downward” force at the transom. To see how this works, imagine the transom was at 45º to the vertical, and you turned the rudder 90º. You essentially have a scoop at the transom, pulling it down. Reducing the angles reduces the down force, but never eliminates it until the rudder is perpendicular to the water.
I have also added sheet styrene ride pads to the sponsons (quick and dirty) and built a turn fin from a scrap of aluminum angle and carbon fiber sheet.
Photos to follow when I get home from work tonight.A nation of sheep breeds a government of wolvesComment
