I did it in a milling machine with a type of cutter called a slitting saw.

I thought you might have used a saw. A tiny mill would have been very time-consuming, in addition to being delicate.

The geometry of the ball link placement to the hinge line makes installation a bit more challenging; as some allowance needs to be made for horizontal movement of the linkage, bit I think I have it worked out. I'll post more photos this weekend.

        Sacrilege

To any machinist worth his salt, adding “blacksmithed” parts to a nicely machined unit is sacrilege. The only saving issue is that we are talking prototype work here. This is not the “final” part I will install; it was just something I found in the parts bin that was a close fit. I need a better solution. Yes, I could blacksmith another arm to fit, but a nicely machined part would look much better.

Joe, I have a suggestion: You need to make a machined arm that will put the linkage perpendicular to the rudder hinge line. With the ball link where it was originally set, there was differential rudder throw, and the linkage rod would swing through a rather large horizontal movement, making a HUGE or slotted hole in the transom necessary. I used a micro clevis in my MHZ Miss Madison that required reducing the thickness of the control arm, but the parts are small and look right on a micro rudder. Maybe something like a “C-shaped” arm with 4-40 threads in one end and a small hole in the other that fits these micro clevis links.

Well, I have made it official: There will be a second MTH Prototype build when this one is completed. I just ordered another hull from Randy. I have enough parts to build a couple more, so it should go together quickly. My friend and fellow SLOBS member Mike, is not the most skilled builder out there, so I will see to it that he gets Prototype #1 for just the cost of materials (cheap). Mike had some issues getting his MHZ shovel set up and wound up trading to another of one the SLOBS for a 2.4 gig radio system. He will get to race Prototype #1 against the rest of us SLOBS.

I probably will not post much of this second prototype build, as it should be essentially the same as #1. I will remove the lip around the hull and build up the sponson edges with thickened epoxy as I did with the Campbell Shovel. I may even go so far as adding the graphite ride surfaces if #1 is successful beyond my expectations.

Do you have or could you take a picture of the Slitting Saw?

A slitting saw looks like a micro precision-ground "SkillSaw" blade. It is chucked in in a mill with an arbor. They work well on a horizontal mill.

Randy, I will post up a photo of the slitting saw in a day or so.

I see what you mean about wide horizontal motion of the control rod. I like your idea of using some type of C shaped piece to move the linkage up closer to the hinge pivot. I will give it a chewing and see what I can come up with.

Your link piece looks pretty dang good by the way.

I made a new piece because I did not like the possibility of the brass threaded end "hanging up" on the through-transom hole. With just a 1/16" wire, there is nothing to get caught in the hole.

Nice clean layout with room to spare. It looks like you have solved the age old proplem with micro's, "where do you put every thing?".

I'm realy itchy to hear how it goes. There is still a few minutes of daylight, have your neighbor hold the flash light. LOL

My pond is a distance away. A benefit of the micro is the ability to stick in in a briefcase and take it to work. Mabe I can find some nearby water.

                            Excellent.

So whens it going in the water?

I started to add some epoxy to sharpen the transom and man I got a real mess... lol

If I get it scraped off Im just gonna leave it and get it done.

I bought some Carbon Fiber strand mat for the inside of the boat. .05 Oz :)

I wouldnt mind the ribs running down the side and the one from left to right to help stiffen it all up.

Want to get it in the water by end of next month if possible.

I got 4 boats on the project table at once... lol
