    32" Mono Rec's.

Yo fellas. Great forum. Love the website too. I want to order some things, but first I have to ask some questions.

I have a fine design 32" mono. Nice boat, Nice Hardware, Nice Paint.

I am going to pull the FDM gear drive, and install the graupner carbon filled motor mount and do a straight drive.

My ESC is a Hextronic Brushless 120AMP and it handles 20 cells. I have capability to run up to 20 cells, but my 16 cell's are better then my 20 cells.

OK, So what I want to know is, how can I get some speed out of this thing? The motor that I have right now is a Quannum 1000KV 6 pole Brushless motor. Not much RPM, but lot's of tourqe. I had it on the gear drive and with a 55MM prop it only pushed this thing to 25MPH on 16 cells Motor was warm and ESC was barley warm. (no water cooling on motor or ESC)

I am thinking the straight drive, and a prop change will help, but something tells me I really need a Feiago XL motor......

    So.....What would you fellas use for a motor? I have carbon props from 35MM to 55MM and I have a X447 2 blade, X440 3 blade, P220 and a P225 all to try out.

I am hoping maybe I can hit 40MPH on 16 to 20 cells...............

Advice would be helpful, this boat looks great but it has been NO FUN without some speed....O and of course I am gonna order from OSE cause they rock! :D

I have heard that a 9XL on the fdm gear drive can push the Aeromarine Triton 29 to 40+. Iam not familiar with your hull, but it looks to me that you can move the batteries farther back. Iam not sure though as my mono is set up different than yours.

Well, I'm not going to be running the gear drive. I don't like them.

Also, I have a friend darla with a Titan29 and a 8XL on a FDM Gear drive. My SV on 14 cells is as fast as her setup on 16 cells.....

No tranny for me.......Thanks for the reply and info.

my mono(30")runs a 1860 Kv motor, on 16 cells and a x440 it was well over 40mph,direct drive. A 9Xl is pretty close in kv.

                Hey FE Chris,
I'm curious why you would rather run a straight shaft?
It is MUCH harder to trim the boat due to the fact that all you have to adjust is cg and trim tabs. Are you racing or just messing around with your buds?? How long do you want to run??

                    Just messing around......Not racing.

Truth be told, I stripped some screws, and some holes and such on my gear drive last time I had it out. I was in a rush. I got it back in the boat, but it's a one time shot, or I have to order parts for it. I will never order anything from FDM again. So out it goes...............

So instead of using a gear drive....I'm going to use a straight shaft. Thats why I just wanna order a feaigo XL and be done with it.

Run time? I dunno 5-6 minutes on 16 cells would be nice......Maybe less if I can get more speed.....

I like things to go fast...Sometimes because of work all I have time for is 5 minutes of FE fun....

Keep the gear drive, it is probably installed better than you can mount a direct drive motor. Frankly, the reason your boat is "slow" is because you do not understand how to set up a gear drive - and we can help with that. A local club member has the same boat and setup (just a different motor) and his goes 40 mph with a mild setup and 16 cells. Your friend's Titan is slow because the gear drive is not set up for speed - perhaps she enjoys having more run time instead. :)

The boat will run very poorly with a solid shaft BTW.

Some folks don't like gear drives because they do not understand them. Often they remove the gear drive and discover they have to do a lot of work to mount the motor and to get the motor alligned correctly with the shaft. Then they find that if they want to add cells they have to get a new motor....

Speed and run time are mutually exclusive. The faster you go the less time you can run, it has to be a balance of the two. A gear drive lets you have both easily - although not at the same time. If you want long run time you just have to change one gear. If you want to go fast, you change one gear. If you want to run more cells you don't need a new motor, you just change a gear. The flexibility of a gear drive is its real value, but you can go just as fast with a gear drive as you can with direct drive. You just have to learn how to set it up.

If you are so adamant against buying from Fine Design, buy here instead - same stuff:

I dont know much about gear drives, but I agree with the mounting advice. Mounting the motor is a serious pain, especially with a straight shaft. I've remounted the motor in my villain 3 times and finally I think I have pretty straight. With tamer setups, it's not noticeable but when you start really increasing the rpms, you will have vibration if it's not close to perfect. Not saying it cant be done, but if I could use a flex drive I would

Thanks for the advice, but before we go any further......I guess I mis-led you guys with my terms. I don't want a straight shaft, I am going to use a flex shaft. I have a villain....I know about the straight shafts. I was tired when I wrote that other post, just was'nt thinking.

Yeah....Not sure, guess I might just see what the parts will cost me for the gear drive.

So if I wanna X off the gear box and use a flex setup, that would work right?

And I was thinking about my FDM comment. Well, what can I say, I have read to many times about that place not getting back to people, and not having very good service.

I really just wanna get rid of the Gear box if possible. I know how I am gonna mount the motor up without the gear box in there. Flex shaft .130 is what I wanna use. Thats whats already in the boat.
