Randy in the pictures it looks like the side of the sponsons pretty much go straight down. Any thought of making it a more conventional looking sponson like this?

I see what you mean Jim.

I do see some down slope there, but looks like.. oh.. about 1/2" of vertical before it starts the slope. Would it cause much of a difference? I guess it depends on where the water line sits when the boat isn't moving. If the water line is higher, then I guess it would take longer for the boat to 'break' free and get on plane.

                Randy,

I like the look of your dropped-sponson hydro. As Jim pointed out, the sponson sides seem to have a large vertical section, but I know that most of this gets cut off before joining the hull halves. I checked out your photo of the test-pull and it looks good. My only question is: Did you leave enough room (vertically) to fit a motor in there? I know on the MTH, there needed to be a "bubble" in the hatch to allow room for the motor.

I’ve been working on the drawings for the ’77-’81 Atlas, and a couple of things have come up.

First, at 1:25 scale (to match the Allison engine I have) is just a bit too small. It works out to just under 14”. Additionally, fitting the Chinese outrunner in there will be a challenge.

Second, I’m still not 100% certain which engine the ’77 – ’81 Atlas used. The ’82 Atlas used a Merlin, and I’m beginning to think the earlier version used that engine as well. I’ve done a lot of research so far, and other than some grainy photographs of the exhaust stacks, I just can not seem to find a conclusive statement anywhere. If it is indeed the case that it used the Merlin, then I may go with 1:24 scale. I have a 1:24 scale Merlin in my Box-O-Stuff that I can use. That way the boat will be about 14-1/4” long.

Still, at 1:24 scale, it is going to be a challenge to hide the outrunner in that hull. I think it can be done by placing the motor horizontally and using a U-joint as the motor/shaft connector. Look for a cool solution from the Doctor on this.

Thanks for the info Jim, I was certain somebody here had the facts.

The 1:24 Merlin is a resin-cast model I think I found on ebay. He may have included his contact info in the kit, I'll check it out when I get home tonight and post the data if I find it.

Do you have photos of the Atlas engine/engine bay?

Ya know I had not thought about that If you look at the picture I was using that part is below the water line. It could be done, I want to keep the rub rail at the seam a little big to keep the join strong. But below that we could change to make it more scale.
