Well, I took Garry’s 1977 Atlas plans over to my favorite reprographics center to get them reduced to 1:25 scale. When they were reproducing my plans, they saw what they were and a number of discussions followed (they are into R/C cars and such). One thing led to another; then, they took me in the back to show me their laser cutter (32” capability) and their 5’ x 10’ CNC router.

Now this opens up a whole new world of possibilities! Discussions ensued, and it looks like I may be able to reproduce Garry’s hull in 1:25 scale as either a laser-cut kit or a CNC routed kit. I chose 1:25 scale instead of 1:24 because I just happen to have a 1:25 scale AMT plastic model kit of an Allison V-1710 that is perfect for this size hull. I need to do some AutoCAD work to produce cutting files and revise the motor/battery locations, but that is an easy task.

    Anybody thinking what I’m thinking???

Hmmmm..... After laying out the parts on the 1:25 scale plans, it looks like they won't fit very well. 1:24 will work a lot better. Time to go re-plot the plans. My plotter is not working (needs the drive belt replaced), so I have to head back to the reprographic place.

I have had a number of discussions with Garry Finlay regarding his plans (existing and future), and I think there may be some exciting developments in the future. I need to finish my BBY Micro Turbine Hydro first (painting phase), and finish the RescueJet (I have all the materials and electronics). When these projects are out of the way, I can concentrate on the 1:24 scale kits.

Anything in particular that you would like to see in a micro?

I'm thinking either the '77 Atlas, or maybe the Pay'N Pak Turbine at this time. Both are Pickleforks. If it works, I might consider a shovel (of sorts ) as a second go-around.

Doc I'm sure you've seen this site, but I thought I'd post it up just incase some others have not seen it. http://www.microhydros.com/ there is a ton of great micro information there.

Here is a little update on the happenings at the Stinkbugworks (a.k.a. my shop):

Painting of the BBY Micro Turbine Hydro continues. I’m ready to shoot the final coat of yellow for the fins, the cowl, and the hull bottom. I need to get my vinyl-cutter guy to cut new masks for the U-numbers so that I may paint the hull top and wing with the contrasting color.

Work on the RescueJet is near completion. I need to cut some holes for the power wires, a bit more waterproofing, some sanding, and apply a quick-and-dirty paint job.

Then on to the next project and the subject of this thread:

A 1:24 scale model of the ’77 Atlas Van Lines. Garry Finlay has graciously provided some reduced drawings for my use and I have been laying out the necessary components. At 1:24 scale, the SSSH spec motor will just barely squeak into this hull. Jeeze, this thing is going to be tiny! 14-1/2” tiny. I will not have much room to offset the driveline unless I offset the cowl, but I will do as much offset as is possible. I will need to use the JetJoints to get the motor at an angle that will keep it hidden under the cowl. I plan to use my 2 mm straight-shaft arrangement for simplicity and scale looks.

if you used a flex shaft you could get the offset and mounting angle accomplished a bit easier

I agree, but I have come to like the simplicity of a straight shaft. Furthermore, any strut I use will look WAY too big hanging off that tiny transom. Joe Solinger’s micro rudder and turn fin will look about right, but all that metal hardware will detract from the scale appearance I want to achieve with this project.
