    Jet's Latest Hair-Brained Idea

Well, the BBY MTH is nearing completion. As I see it taking shape, it is looking great and it should run like Prototype #1 without much futzing around with the setup. When the MTH is completed, I have the following in the building queue:

    1. Finish the Micro Scat Cat (finish the hull bottom and add paint).
    2. Finish the Systems Cat (lots of hull work and paint, then add a motor/ESC).
    3. Build a rescue boat (I have the power system and drive, plus hull building material).
    4. Finish the JetCat29 (still a lot to do on this).

The reason for this posting is to explore my next new hair-brained idea. I may put some of the above-mentioned projects on hold while I start something new.

Santee Sport Scale racing is working great. It’s fast, cheap, and out of control. I have a few boats that fit roughly into this category, but maybe there is something else that can be done. I have some preliminary plans worked out based on Simon’s Canard that I could build, but one of the SLOBS came up with something that I think is a bit better. SSSH “rules” say something about a 400 mm hull length. That works out to almost exactly 1/20 scale. I am quite impressed with Garry Finlay’s hull plans and I am thinking of reproducing them in AutoCAD at 1/20 scale, then having a laser-cut kit made using 1/64”, 1/32” and 1/16” ply where applicable and the rest in balsa. I would use the same direct-drive (cheap, readily available, and very effective) that I used in the MTH. Garry’s plans are readily available and can be scaled-down to 1/20 at your local Kinko’s or similar reprographics outlet.

Perhaps SSSH could put more emphasis on the “scale” part of this. Almost to the point that the ERCU guys do with their 1/10 scale boats. Granted, 1/20 scale would not have the level of detail that you would find in 1/10, but there could be plenty of opportunities to “spruce-up” a hull.

My first project in the SSSH series would be the Jones hull for a number of reasons. First and foremost is the room available inside the hull. Second, it will give me the opportunity to build yet another scale Short Circuit.

Who would like to come to Santee next summer to race in the First Annual Santee Sport Scale Hydro Competition? The rules will be to use the 3000 rpm/V Mystery motor/ESC combo, 1/20-scale hulls, straight shafts, plastic props, and 2S or 7 round cells. Static judging will be included in determining the winner. You boat MUST be a scale model of a full-sized boat. If you want to build the Winston Eagle (outrigger), be my guest. If you want to build a canard, be my guest, just make it SCALE!

I'm in Bill - What ever scale you choose is fine, We can put all the detail we choose on them.. I have a set of plans for a 1/10 or 1/8 can't remember right now I'd like to shrink down to this size..

I still have to finish the fenders on my trailer, home remodling, work on the airplanes,..........

I think I will just build the rescue boat, then proceed directly to a 1/20 scale boat. I'm going to do the MTH in the Short Circuit theme. (Aside: Darin an I apparently have a lot in common, all his boats are Oh Boy! Oberto). I'll just make the U-numbers and decals for the MTH to 1/20 scale, so I can also use the same artwork for this new idea. I may forgo the AutoCAD and laser-cutting, and just build it as a one-off from plans. I already have extra motors, ESCs, servos and such. I have the plans. I have boxes full of balsa sheets, sticks, and bits. I may even have an extra set of Joe's hardware (perfect for a wood hull this size).

Dr, Jet I would love to go race with you guys, but your a little too far away from me in chico ca. can't wait to see what you come up with. Are you going to make it like the cometition on RRR? There was some awsome builds there.

My friend, Jack builds awesome scale models, and he has a hankerin' to build a Miss Thriftway Too (the cabover version). I get a kick out of these little models, so Jack and I will have a little friendly competition between ourselves. I'm thinking a full cowl with barely visible engine details under the full hood (another reason I like the '57 Short Circuit).

Maybe I could make it a "Gentlemen's Challenge" here and see if anyone else wants to build one.

I might be interested in building one for fun, if I can fit it in with all my other projects.

Bill, what are you thinking of using for a rescue boat....scratch....tug etc. ?

I have a Vac-U-Tug Jr on the back burner.

Not to hijack my own thread or anything, here goes:

Here’s what I have in mind for the rescue boat: I have a 1.7:1 geared 7.2V Speed 400 motor with a 15-Amp, reversible, waterproof, marine ESC. I have the drivetrain from the Graupner B-24 (steerable outdrive). I have a large (45 mm or so), flat pitch (0.9?), 3-bladed prop. I have a bunch of 6 mm Depron foam.

I’m going to make a small tub (think something like a cross between an outrigger tub and a landing craft). It will have a submerged prop. The steerable outdrive will make “backing up” easy.

The “sponsons” are just going to be PVC tubes with pool noodles on them. The tub will attach to the sponsons with Velcro. The tub will be about 12” long and maybe 4” wide, the sponsons may be about 16” apart and 12” long.

Dr. Jet, I'd appreciate some example pictures (with disclaimer) or links to the hull plans. That way, some of us that are not as savvy could review and conduct our own assessment of what it will take to get to a finished product.

                    Thanks.

Thanks for putting that link up Ghost.

The Atlas looks like it will work well at 1/20. The Notre Dame may be a biy too low in profile, and you may have problems getting the motor to fit in the hull.

There are other plans available, or, you could draw up your own, using Garry's plans as a reference.

After I finish the MTH and the rescue boat, I'll start a build thread for my 1/20-scale entry.

If there are enough participants, we can set-up a barbecue and some tables and make it a picnic/race event. There is a "splash Zone" at the pond for the kids.

I'm thinking the First Annual SLOBS 1/20-Scale Hydro Shoot-Out will be in August/September sometime.

I just ran the numbers. In order to make the boats 15 inches or so, they have to be 1:24 scale. That opens a bunch of possibilities, as driver figures and scale engines are available at 1:24. I think I have a 1:24 Merlin somewhere in my collection. Hmmm.......
