    Randy,

I was just reading about your sale on RRR, and I got to thinking when we first met... It was at some race somewhere, and I had a piece'O cr@p something or other, and I was charging the boat off my car. I had a dead car that afternoon.....

The SLOBS would love to have you and Wilmer come down. The First Annual Santee Sport Scale Hydro competition will be in late summer, so let's get to building a little SCALE boat. 1:24 or 1:25 scale. You have to use the 3000 Kv Mystery motor and a plastic prop. 2S1P. It has to look like a "real" full-sized boat. Anything else goes. Remember, we're all about "No Rules" so we keep things "casual", if you get my drift. Closer to scale gets you more coolness points.

    Normally, the losers have to buy the winner lunch. This might be a big enough deal that we will have to make that the losers buy the winner dinner! ;

Sounds cool, You were talking about a motor in 1/25 scale for the deck any info for the rest of us? I will be working on the deck and bottom soon for the new ABS shovel for those people who do not like to build in wood.

Your POV is understandable, I was just throwing it out there. I am looking forward to this kit.

I think I'll scratch-build the prototype, and if successful, make a laser-cut kit.

AMT made a model of an Allison-powered drag car. You can find them on ebay. Steal the engine from tha kit. They also kitted just the motor. Again, you can find that sometimes on ebay (that's what I did).
Somewhere a long time ago I found a cast-resin Merlin in 1:24. I'd like to use that in the Atlas, but I think the '77 boat had the Allison didn't it?

I have the drivetrain from the Graupner B-24 (steerable outdrive). I have a large (45 mm or so), flat pitch (0.9?), 3-bladed prop. I have a bunch of 6 mm Depron foam.
The RescueJet (it may get a new name after it has the final paint scheme) is ready for sea trials this morning.

Right now, it is painted in "Basic White", but I have a great idea for a color scheme/livery. Photos to follow in another thread.

Well, the RescueJet is done. It came out looking like some sort of farm implement, so I had some fun with the paint.

I was ready to start the SSSH hydro, but a small repair came up. After a brutal collision, I need to re-finish my sponson bottoms on the MHZ shovel. Seems I lost a big chunk of gelcoat.

Then, I can start on the new project

I didn't really draw any plans. I made some sketches on paper, grabbed some parts from the parts bin, laid them out on some basswood sheets and started cutting. I drew the plans directly on the wood in most cases.

I made a box for the motor and outdrive, then I made a balsa block nose. I added a layer of 'glass and epoxy for waterproofing/durability. I made the sponsons from a sheet of EPP foam. The yellow fins are phenolic sheet. Mostly, it's made from stuff I had in the shop.

After I assembled it, it looked like some sort of farm implement, so I built the top and the "cab" from Depron and added a smoke stack to make it look like a combine. I found John Deere paint colors in the same brand as I used for the base paint job (it was originally going to be a white boat before I got the tractor idea). I'm working on a John Deere logo and other JD graphics.

Three key factors in making it work: #1. Steerable outdrive with reversable speed control. Good for manuevering. #2. The ability to get something under the stricken victim, so as not to run over it.
#3. Enough control such that a recovered boat that is "crooked" between the sponsons will not cause steering issues. The yellow fins act as rudders, keeping everything tracking straight.

Some other features: Overall sponson spacing based on the typical size of the boats we run (usually less than 18"). Geared 7.2 V Speed 400 with a large diameter, very low pitch, 3-bladed, submerged prop. Plenty of pushing power with low current draw (in the range of 10 amps or less). No tools required for assembly, just rubber bands. No complicated hatch removals to turn it on/off. Interchangeable batteries. I can run anything from 900 mah up through 5000 mah.

What was your search, to find the AMT kit?

I ended up building a droped sponson "Eagle Electric" shovel. It is comming along fine will do a test for fit pull next week. I really like the little boat. think I might do a lot more bigger droped sponson "Eagle Electric" shovel and possably have a while line some day.

                              Randy,

Here's a link to the Allison-powered kit. I see these on ebay all the time. AMT also kitted just the Allison engine, and another kit with the Allison and a handfull of Detroit V-8s.

I used the search term: "Allison".
