I lay a piece of glass on every seam (axial and vertical). This slows me down considerably during the build, but I really think it makes a strong boat.

BTW, I'm making progress on the cowl. It's starting to look very good as I'm starting to understand how to wireframe and make complex shapes.

Pete, do you have access to CNC milling at Tech?

Apparently I can do 3D on my system but what to do after that I have no idea. When I Need Parts I draw views and my buddy Eric performs some sort of chicken sacrifice and EDM'S them.

In short, YES. Do I know what I'm doing yet? NO. I have a class next week to covert my 3D model into tool paths. I will keep you posted. BTW, Tom is out there at the shop as well. I think he was trying to take a fiberglass class. Not sure how that is going.

EDM is amazing. Incredible detail. Way above and beyond what I will be able to do.

My buddy that does that is like an evil genius. That equipment he runs goes 24 hours a day to keep up. Hard to get a crumby part for me done.

How are you cutting the pieces you are using now?

3D drawing .dxf file needs to be imported into a software like Master Cam, etc so toolpathing can be created. The software will generate a CNC code for the machine to cut it but, first you need some kind of post processor to mate the CNC code to the machine. Then it's a few presses of buttons after the machine is zero'd out.

I've never tried to design a boat but, Wheel pic. was done with old solidworks 2004 and the Bow's Aluminum starburst facade pieces I toolpathed in Master Cam and were cut out back on a 10' x 20' router from drawings imported from Solidworks or Inventor drawings.

Tomorrow I'm calling a recruiter that contacted me through linked in. Says someone might want me skills...

The wheel was done for practice one day, it's a dimensional copy of a 1/8th scale Venom GPV motorcycle wheel.

Ray - That wheel is cool, and you pretty much nailed the process steps. We are using 'cut3D' software. I'm trained on the wood machine, but not the metal machine (tormach).

Keith - The frames and skins that I've been cutting are on the laser cutter (2D cutting only). The model is drawn in 3D, transposed to 2D (drawing), and then DXF to the laser cutter.

PDF to AutoCAD conversion can be done online for free. Convert PDF to DXF. Upload a file from your computer and enter your email where the file will be sent.

Plus make sure the software and the machine are working in the same units either Imperial or metric. Things get messy on a router table with aluminum when you don't check this and don't start with a foam block or some waste. Boy, I got a few gray hairs that first day when I learned the hard way. Cutter was $5000.00
