Phil Thomas SS45 Q Hydro Build

I've been asking a ton of questions lately and getting a lot of help (THANKS!), so I figured I would give back a little and share my latest build. Hopefully it will help someone else out.

    Hull: Phil Thomas SS45 SuperSport
    Motor: NEU 1527 1Y
    Purpose: Q Hydro

    1. Started by cutting apart the canard wing. I used an exacto saw to cut straight.

    2. I cut the slots in the sponsons with a dremel.

    3. Used a tape guide and glued them in with epoxy.

    4. Decided to go with a Williams 5" rail motor mount. Top notch stuff from a top notch guy at South River RC. The rail mount should make the boat a little stiffer. There is a lot of wide open space for flex. I also plan on adding a carbon fiber rod up front aligned with the turn fin.

    5. I made (4) aluminum backing plates to support the mounts. I also threaded the holes in the backing plates so no nuts were necessary. Made it a little easier to get it together.

      6. It was a bit of a struggle to get the backing plates in place, but nothing a popsicle stick and some sticky tape wouldn't handle.

        7. Turns out that an old collet makes an excellent pin vice! LOL!! I have a 90° attachment for my drill somewhere around here, but this got the job done.

I made this turn fin and bracket last year by tracing a friends. Hopefully it will work. It's pretty hefty!

Good work Pete! I like the coupler idea for the drill bit. I am going to steal that one!

              Later,
              Mike

Tony - Thanks. Did yours start cracking on the inside of the sponsons? Or the canard itself?

I hope to have this done by next race. Rudder is on it's way from OSE! I think that's all I need.

Mike - What paint did you use on your orange Uhaul boat? That seems to hold up pretty well.

www.klasskote.com 2 part epoxy paint. When that shift cures it's hard as a rock!

I hope so. I've really been dragging this one. Had the hull since October I think.

This is a great hull! I had to modify the nose to except 2 5000 6s batteries but other than that it was a fairly easy build. These hulls are stable as can be at 100 +. Your going to love it. Good luck.

Thanks Gary. I remember watching your trials at around 90ish. I take it you did eventually hit 100? Amazing. I'll check your threads. Would also like to see that nose modification.
