Yes mason,Make sure you have enough straight rod to pass thru the transom. You don't want to have a bend ramming into the transom.

Ok.. also, it seems like when i bend, im going to loose where i had the rod lock. It will be shorter. So should i start the bend at the transom or at the rudder?

Put the bend right at the center between the transom and rudder arm, still leaving enough straight rod to pass through the transom.

I would mark the rod with a Sharpie where you want the bend to end before the transom. Then take the rod out of the boat and place in the vice and put a 30 degree bend rearward. Then about 3/4 inch put the opposing bend in it so the rod goes back to straight.
