    Larrys INSANE 34

I picked this up a few weeks ago from Jeff at Insane. I had it built with a double lay-up for strength and so I dont have to re-inforce it myself. The gel coat is perfect as well as the lay up. Ive never owned a nicer hull. Here are a few pics to get going on the build.

I bought a sheet of carbon/kevlar cloth from www.kintecracing.com in red/black to lay inside. I put this in purely for looks even though it did add more strength to the hull. The install turned out decent for a first timer using this type of cloth. I used KeithBradleys carbon fiber install how-to in FighterCats forum. He explains it very well and makes it easy for anyone to do.

Heres all the parts going on and in it. Power will be from a Nue 1527/1.5/D or a Nue 1527/1/Y both on 6s. Im going to run both motors and see which one I like most. The motor mount is from Pete Zicha and a Castle Hydra Ice 240 will be mounted on top. All running hardware is Speedmaster. The flex is an Aeromarine .187 which I havent used before, so we'll see how it holds up compared to Hugheys. I have yet to cut the wood for the 4" rails.

Looks great! The hybrid carbon colored cloth is really weak though, it's colored fiberglass woven with carbon but if it's just for looks!

how does that make it weak tho? you mean "weaker" the the all carbon cloth. im sure its still plenty strong

It has added a bit of strength to the hull. Like I said, its in there for looks. Thats the only reason I put it in there. Im sure he means "weaker" than carbon fiber cloth.

The stuff from kintec is actually Carbon Fiber / Kevlar Hybrid. Doesnt say anything about fiberglass.

Man, that rig is going to rock ! Looks great in red. I'll say that with the reinforced hull it'll be really strong. Even the standard layup is quite solid; on a really windy, chopped up day at the lake I slam/dunked my 34 so hard that it broke the entire rail/motor/battery assembly loose from the hull with NO damage to the hull. I now use West Systems G/flex epoxy to secure the rails. Keep your progress posted.

Ill get on it soon as it gets below 100 degrees. I cant stand to be in the garage sweating after Ive been working outside all day. Thanks for the compliment.

if you race it, set the turn fin depth aprox. 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches measured from the bottom of the hull
where the turn fin is mounted to the bottom (tip) of the turn fin.
any shorter and the boat will skip, bounce around, do dumb things in the turns.

Thanks, Carl. Ive heard of turning issues/turn fin issues. I want to race it, but I dont think Ill get the time this year.

Larry, I run an XL turn fin (as does Mark) down & deep but never had any racewater turning issues as some have reported although I trust these reports. Mark shortened both strakes, I shortened only the outside one even though I didn't feel I needed to. Here's a P-Mono heat where I took a first and Mark a second (after his bouy-hit one lap penalty). Tyler's rockin' DF33 rocked over, Boyd's Cyberstorm & Naveed's Arowana had to roll slowly to survive, and the only (charitably) dumb thing I did going into turn one on the fourth lap was to go wide to let my teammate Mark pass to help him make up his penalty, then I just pedaled easily on lap five and six. Oh, and I dumbly (almost) cut the course after the finish instead of doing the cooldown lap.

                            yep, yep, yep.
the strakes need to be shortened.

FWIW, I seem to be in the unenviable position of being a minority of one who isn't convinced that the strakes are a problem. Also as the least senior member of the beta testers of this hull (messers Newland, Ferreira, and Schweers and myself) my opinion holds the least weight. Whatever.
