    But here is my question....

There are about 300 million US citizens, 135 million filed a tax return in 2006. Of which 43 million with 0 due or negative. That's 90 million/less than 1/3rd or so people paying the taxes to keep the country rolling. Whats wrong with that picture?
By the way, before I'm blasted, I realize that the children are a percentage of the people not filing, but not the whole 165 million.

The latest Census estimates put the 2009 number at around 70 million children under the age of 18.

        In the article it states:

"The Effect of Recent Tax Cuts on Non-Payers
As President Bush pushed through his two major tax bills in 2001 and 2003, opponents focused on the dollar amounts saved by high-income individuals. What many critics have ignored is the number of people who were removed from the tax rolls as a result of the expansion of the child tax credit, which was a key provision of the President's Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001.

As Figure 1 illustrates, the number of tax returns with zero or negative tax liability has risen steadily over the past decade. However, it accelerated sharply between 2000 and 2004 due to the effects of tax changes during President Bush's first term of office."

I know I'm no economist but it seems we need tax reform before health care reform.

What we need is political reform. More of a flat tax or simplified tax on personal income.

Rest easy, thanks to one of the most powerful and effective lobbying efforts out there I suspect that in the end there will be very little that really happens with health care. You can happily keep paying Aetna, AIG, Cigna, HealthPoint, or whomever and praying to God you do not actually need to use the insurance and if you do that you do not end up bankrupt anyhow.

Keep in mind these companies exist to make money, NOT to provide you with coverage. The entire insurance industry is a legalized Ponzi scheme that has so much money behind it no politician will ever get it changed much.

All should be right in the Universe now. Big companies can continue to happily screw us while convincing us that they are really looking out for us.

BTW - if you really want to know how they get away with this read this:

Watch out what you wish for! A flat tax might sound good but at the 25-28% level that's been discussed, if you own a home and have a few medical deductions you're probably well below that already! I know it would raise my taxes to the moon and I ain't no over $250K guy either! In fact, not over $40K. People who are hard working honest people yet with low incomes, like school teachers, fire fighters, cops, would be hit the hardest. Is that really what you want? There are cities in this country where those people already can't afford to live.

True enough. I've always liked the saying that ignorance can be cured but stupid is forever. I just hope that we are more ignorant than stupid.

But however you want to label it we have some real issues that affect the very core of how we will move forward.

Understandably insurance companies are in the business to make a buck. But actively seaching for loopholes to not pay on claims, after a significant time has passed since a policy was sold, is just plain wrong. What the real issue seems to be, is what is the price of life? In essence, is it ok to tell someone that they cannot have the kind of healthcare that would save their life because somebody might not get paid? Something is very disturbing about that. More should be done in preventative healthcare. Healthy lifestyles should be encouraged. Maybe a tax on unhealthy foodstuffs should be levied? We should have more compassion for our fellow humans than we do for our wallets.
We all agree that there should be something done. But we don't agree how. Can someone please provide some suggestions rather than political bantering?

I'm all for a flat tax. Who says the flat tax has to be 30%. Why should 43 million families or individuals not pay a dime into the system? Do they not take advantage of the same things I do?
