Castle 2200 - 6cell setup - Overheated and broke the shaft

Hi all, We installed the castle 2200 motor, 6cell lipo voltage, offset rudder, COG about 10 inches from back. Motor was hardly warm at all, esc was slightly warm, they both took the voltage with no problem at all. Still need some dialing in but it is very close. It was very fast and pretty stable for the speed, the problem we had was...........

The stuffing box overheated from the extreme rpm's. This must have caused (we are guessing) the flex cable to twist up (looked like a wound-up rubberband) and broke. It took all our might for two of us to pull out the remaining part of the flex. My question is, should we put a new flex in and try again with more grease maybe? Or try maybe a wire drive or something in that line? Or some other idea? Thanks!

Here is a link to the video when it broke......

Thats too much rpm. 2200 is a 4s motor. As far as the flex, it could have been the high rpm, but I'm not sure. If it was a .150 flex, then you may have overpowered the flex causing it to break. Try a .187 flex or a .98 wire drive if the stuffing tube doesn't have extreme bends.

I'm with the other guys. 150 cable isn't up to that task.

Just out of curiosity does your esc have or are you using reverse mode?? I have seen this happen on the Spartan shock loading the cable from forward to reverse and vice versa will twist the cable clean in half.

Thanks for the input so far, everyone....

If 150 flex is not up to this setup would the 078 wire be stronger? and up to the task? and would it work with the amount of bend?.....

If so how do I fill the extra gap inside the stuffing tube? extra tubing added inside the existing tubing maybe?

If so I would like to get the items on order while steven is still shipping before he leaves

The esc is a modified castle creations monster with added water cooling, yes it does have reverse and we were using the reverse several times during that run because there was a lot of loose seaweed that kept fooling the prop and we were reversing to throw it off. it is programed with a 2 second delay before it will go to reverse, but no delay to go forward, maybe part of the issue as well, now that you brought that up we will see if we can add a delay in the forward as well.

                Thanks

flex cables are "one way" only. running them in reverse is asking for trouble and may very well have caused your issue.

Run a .187 cable and remove the teflon. You can set the reverse to no more than 20% power without unwraveling the flex.

I had a problem with my flex-shaft and noticed that the sturt was actually moving forward from the momentum...i put an extra bolt in there since the one wasnt holding it well enough

On a different note, I would def switch up that wire to some 8g

Thanks again to everyone for all the input, every comment is appreciated!

I want to order the parts for a .078 wire drive but cant seem to find everything, any suggestions?

Also... Does anyone know if the .078 wire drive is stronger than .150 flex????

                            Thanks everyone, John

It is. But you would either have to tear out the stuffing tube and replace it or slide an appropriate sized tube inside the current tube (if that can even be done). It would be much less work going to a .187 flex with no teflon. IME the bend in the MG may be a little too much for .078 wire which is very stiff. What part of Md are you located?
