Thank you very much, i think i should be more confident about my skills! I will buy FG strips tomorrow at my lhs and start the repairs. But for the epoxy thickness, is it thin, thick, or in the middle? i usually use gel epoxy, but i think it won't do for this kind of repairs. And is it ok to use fast setting epoxy, like 5-6 minutes setting?
    Thanks again!

No, it's got to be the thickness like the Finishing epoxy, thinner is better, 30 min. is minimum because you need the time to work on your inlay.
Please note that I use West System for my builds so I use that for my repairs, so when I speak about the Z-poxy's finishing epoxy, I am comparing the viscosities of both of these. I have used this for a number of repairs and they were OK.
I don't know what kinds of epoxy you have at your LHS, but gel is a NO No, lol...
The regular epoxy from Z-poxy is ALREADY TOO THICK for this kinds of repair, otherwise an excellent epoxy for building.
It has to be thin enough to soak thru the strip.
Too many boats, not enough time...

I second the West System stuff. Yeah, it's not cheap and you would probably have to order it but it's really good stuff to have around if you mess with boats!

Hi, since i can't find the z-poxy or west system stuff in my area, and i can't wait for 7 to 14 day shipping if ordered on the net, i decided to try this stuff:IMG_20150629_163939.jpg Ill try one layer of clothing and 1 oz of epoxy. tomorrow ill check if it is stiff enough or if i need to put another layer on.

I'm sorry I could not come in sooner to direct you to Canada Composites. The epoxy you bought can work but, you have to be extremely fast because it will setup in FIVE MINUTES!

I'm sure it is very thick as well. It would be best to save this stuff for other projects and fixes.

Ouch, you got that one good! Was that something floating in the water or did the boat leave the water and hit a tree???

tlandauer: What kind of structural epoxy would you suggest to use for things like mounts? Zpoxy is a little too thin so I try to put in a bunch of milled fiberglass in there and it seems to work OK but still not the best solution it seems.

The Z poxy epoxy ( PT-39, 30 min.) is very high quality, itself is much thicker than West System epoxy. If you add milled fiberglass, it should make the mount very strongly attached.
This is a very tough epoxy, once cured I take it out of the mixing cup and use a hammer to smash it, you will be surprised to learn that it takes many blows to break it.
I use West System mixed with milled FG, I also use JB Weld for my motor mount/servo mount and battery trays. All work well....
For the Z poxy and West system, you need to be precise with mixing. needless to say, sand and sand and sand then clean with either denatured alcohol or acetone on the surfaces you are about to glue.
With acetone you need to be careful with your skin and the vapor, it is not the best for your health.

Hi Ray, thanks for those links, i keep them in security! The epoxy i bought is just thin enough not to drip too fast and go everywhere. it is about the same thickness as corn sirup, maybe a little thicker, but not much more. The repairs are almost done! i only need to put the stuff back in the boat, and test for leaks!

Looking at the picture makes me think: ''where did you find a boat tree! I never thought boat were growing in trees!!!'' lol! You will have much more job than i had, but i,m sure you get her to float and race again! i would probably be crying out loud if that kind of damage happened to my precious little boat!

I decided to put another FG layer, just to be on the safe side... But now my question is: Do i need to re-balance my hull? The epoxy and FG probably added 2.5oz to the left side.

Do it on the starboard side too, you can balance while add some integrity to your hull, why not?
