Anyway, back on topic.
I am pretty confident that this motor qualifies as a $44 cheapie
I bought it about 18 months ago and stuck it in my 26" ply/balsa/planked wild thing, granted the KV is kinda high for a knockoff but I was kind of a bit naive back then.
I matched it with a water jacket and a home cooled mystery80 esc, X440 prop on 10 nimh cells for a bit of speed but certainly not blistering. It was pretty much scorching after that run. So I decided to stick a logger on there to see what was going on. Being that it is an ET V2 and a 100amp limit, I kinda got the feeling that I was exceeding that as it didn't like the run at all and I only got a bit of data just before I stuck it in the water.
Dropped my prop down to an X435 for a totally different boat. It ran a lot quicker as the motor was unwinding a lot more, the amps came down to around 65 at 26500 rpm.
As of now, I have found that an X632 is an optimum prop for this motor and it is pretty quick now too. I run it on 2 x 3S1P 2200's 20C in parallel for a nice stable boat however I have recently been running it on 2 x 2S1P 3800 25C in series for 4S and a true Wild Thing. If running on 4S I will generally drop the size down to an X432 as it does tend to get a bit warm on the higher pitched prop.
The temps are pretty good for both 3S and 4S, usually after a 5 lap sprint the motor is sitting at around 120F.
From what I have found, yeah the knockoffs can be really good value but and I stress the word BUT, it is definitely a hit and miss affair.
I have been buying chinese stuff here and there in a few different hobbies, and found that the first couple of batches are usually the best ones, if you are lucky enough to get yourself an early batch item, it is usually pretty good quality. It is when they find out that something is a really good seller and start pumping many more out that the quality issues arise.
As has already been stated, these motors cannot take a lot of prop but coupled with the right one can be quite good. For me, this one has paid for itself many times over and I have really flogged it. All for sport running but great value IMO.
