I think sometimes we need a reminder I am going to be changing a few things around, I have always charged my batts outside because of my charger I am using a marine battery but for the longest time popped the hood on the car and used its battery like so many of do at the lake or at home, I can't imagine if that happened close to the engine compartment.

After reading a couple threads like this, and hearing about one first hand, I've finally decided to get a bit more proactive. The bottom set are my boat batts which won't be used until spring, I'll be getting more blocks to build up a charging station also instead of the wooden shelves I have been using.....FYI cinder blocks are only $1.49/ea., can't argue with that.My private off road rc track

A boating guy from the USA sent me this picture of a Max Amps going bad on him at the lake , just glad he had eye protection on when she blew up. I use an Ammo box for storage , i picked it up at an Army surplus store near by .

I use ammo box and store in the fire place, but I am thinking that is not ultimately safe: Ammo box can't stand the heat that's generated by the Lipo fire. I think the building block is a cool idea. Will definitely going that direction.Too many boats, not enough time...Comment

I'm a firm believer that lipos only go up when plugged into a vehicle or charger. Your lipo is not just gonna burst open unhooked sitting in your ammo box or just on your bench. (Unless it gets punctured somehow)... I use an ammo box too, but I drilled a small hole in the top to be extra extra safe.Comment

I know ammo cans aren't necessarily air tight, but it seems that hole would just add more oxygen to the fire. This is NOT a toy?!?Comment

To let air escape, some just take the rubber gasket out. The air will expend when heated and the ammo box will explode ( theoretically any way).
I remember Lipos don't need much oxygen to burn, but I could be dead wrong: thought I read somewhere.Too many boats, not enough time...Comment

Ahhhh....heat! Something I don't get much of on Whidbey Island!!
Way to easy for me to overlook that possibilityThis is NOT a toy?!?Comment

Actually not only heat, When it goes up in flame, it produces gas.
But I should shut up now because I don't like to BS and I felt I already did.

The first stage on my charger and I believe most is a " dummy stage" and it will automatically put in 1.2 v. that's how mine went, got lazy and thought id checked it prior to charge and indeed it was fully charged already. I built a 16"x16" ss steel box for storage of my $3,000 lipo collection and only charge while sitting at the work station in the garage and I don't use lipo sacks even though I have them because by temperature and visual monitoring you cant do either in the sacks and only go off voltage which isn't enough. I've caught another as it started to swell ( which i knew was questionable due to the cells being way off and wouldn't balance properly) and pulled it just in time and in one motion tossed the ball of flame out the garage. These things are like volcano's of lithium flying everywhere!!! I HEARD THE SWELLING AND REACTED SWIFTLY!!I've only had two go while charging and both could have been avoided. I read a commentary from "the battery man" a few page report on the dangers of lipos literally a week prior to the one in the house going up. I used to have my wife cyle all my batteries while i was at work a week prior . Thank you God!
