Didn't bother to check since the pack was smoking. My charger brought them back to 8.4v though

You probably killed your batteries. 3.1 volts per cell is fatal. You also say that they are smoking. Just because they reach full voltage on a charge does not mean anything. I've had small batteries that reach full voltage, yet fail to even power LED's.

Packs don't really heat up much until you go below a certain voltage. When the batteries are out of the boat at home and read some 3.1v, underload forget it they were like 2.6v. When you put a pack on the charger at home you should really get like 3.7 volts. Did the packs puff?

No they didnt puff, they're still hard

they should not get really hot. i use thunderpower 5300 65c pro race and they stay pretty cool.

I had the identical problem. You are running the batteries to low. Don't go below 3.8v per cell. I run my 5000mah 35c 2s lipos for 5ish min and then stop. They stay a bit warm but not hot. If they did puff a tiny bit then they will start doing it progressively worse. I ruined 1 battery from running it to low in my blackjack. It almost went up in flames today it puffed so bad it was easily twice it's size, I had never seen anything like it.
