Well, that was a quick $170...

Back story-Pursuit with Feigao 12xl, have run this boat on both 6 and 8s and had been running 6S on an Etti 150 for the last couple of years. Last time out, I smoked the 150 due to a plug in the cooling system, which turned out to be a blockage in the motor mount cooler. Missing being able to run 8S, I ordered an Etti 120 HV from Steven a few days ago. Package shows up today, get it all soldered up, check for flow through the cooling lines (blew through them) and hit the lake. I repeatedly kept telling myself to make sure to check the water outlet when it comes by but kept having issues with the collet slipping on the flex, so kept getting distracted. Finally got it tight enough to not slip, and was so overwhelmed with joy seeing it run on 8S again that I forgot to check the water outlet as it was coming by. The pics speak for themselves . I know many have lost a lot more than $170 in this hobby, as have I, but to lose two ESC's in a row due to being absent minded just sucks. I only checked the hose going into the boat, never thought to check the rudder pickup- I should have .

I thought for sure I was going to lose the boat- it flamed up pretty good. Wish I had my camera with me, it at least looked cool sitting out in the middle of the lake at dusk glowing like a chinese lantern . I don't know how there are no holes in the boat. Gonna be fun cleaning this one out! The only "good" news is I was smart enough to use old packs for the maiden run...

    That sucks man.
Quick question, was there any water in the boat? A suggestion if your up for it. Mount the ESC higher in the hull. I recently smoked an ESC in a 26'' mono. The ESC was mounted just like yours, very close to the floor. Some water got in after the boot for the rudder push rod came out and the water quickly found its way inside the ESC. The new ESC is now mounted on top of the motor. If "some" water gets in, it won't immediately take out the ESC. Just a suggestion, not sure if that is what happened with yours, but good practice for the future.

Oh man, I feel your pain. My pursuit has that smell as well as the black baked into the interior once the cover comes off. Guess its like a cool scar, showing some past war wounds. Lol.

i know how it is too. I received a custom built whiplash from a guy who im helping start racing in the electrics about a month or so ago and I took it out for my maiden run with it. Ul-1 motor, blue aquacraft spedo, and 2 2s turnigy 40-50c lipos in series on a x440/3 and I got 2 laps and it lit up like dead grass. Lipos were saved and are perfect still. motor is junk, esc hit the trash asa I got home. Ive ran this set up in a rigger and in my pistolero and had no overheating problems or anything and now all of a sudden it blows up on me. So now im having to order 2 spec setups so I can go to the nats this year. 1 is on its way Monday but it sucks. Btw bleach and febreze don't work. it still stinks.

Haha, I knew I wouldn't be alone here :). This is not the first, nor is it going to be the last time I experience the magic smoke, but it still sucked to lose it so quickly over something so stupid. I still don't know how it didn't burn a hole through the boat, you should have seen it glowing through the gelcoat!

Are the Seaking 130HV ESC's any good? It would be nice to save a couple bucks, but don't want it if it is junk either. Thanks.

                We all do dumb thing,
I almost did what you did by pinching my exit line with a big cell I stuffed in the sponsons.
And got lucky I was checking temps and testing that day.
Things where hot and I said ok what happen and what did I change.
My buddy has a couple of the 130a HV and loves them,
He is using one in his Geico setup on 6s and it stays nice and cool.

Pursuit- just yesterday I was running with my buddy who just got one of the new hk monos, the lucus oil, we were close running and I noticed the pursuit seemed to be running sluggish. Was having so much fun I kept running, till kv kicked in. When I went to pick it up it felt very heavy!! Oops forgot to put motor mount cooling hose on. (Pulled it off to tighten flex). Must have had about half gallon in boat!! Everything was under water!! Corosion-x on everything, dried over night and today seems to be ok!!! Bonehead move!!!

Any questions about why I (tried to) express extreme concern about you running a 5S boat on 8S power in this thread... http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...C-motor-timing

If that was directed towards me, this boat had been run on 8S for over a year straight and 6S for several years, it is not a 5S boat on 8S power... The problem I encountered was a plugged rudder pickup so it wasn't getting any water to cool the system. Took out the Etti 150 on 6S last week for the same reason (the same setup that had been run for years on this boat). It is entirely my fault for not checking the complete cooling system. I found a plugged motor plate and assumed that was it since everything flowed through the boat after fixing that, I never even checked the rudder too..

With all due respect, please do not bring your fights into my thread. Thanks.

Back on track here- a couple more questions. Does the Etti not have a thermal cutoff? This is the second one I lost in one week due to heat. Also, too late now, but what are the the wire with servo style plugs and resistor that come with the Etti used for?

                          1. It wasn't directed towards you, yes I saw the part where you stated that you have been running the boat on 8S for awhile.

                          2. Reading about clogged water pick-ups in rudders (not just here) does concern me, wonder if I should stay with transom mount P/U's.

                          3. Wasn't trying to bring any fights to your thread, sorry if you took it that way.

                          4. Check your thread in the WTB section, I did offer you constructive info without any opinions or smarta$$ comments.

Hope this clears up any mis-understandings I might have caused.

                          Regards.

Gotcha. Yeah, the rudder thing has me a bit concerned as well, but two of my boats have rudder pickups and this is the first issue I have ever had, so I'm comfortable using them still. I think it has to do with wherever I used my boat last, it either picked up sediment or it is corroding or something. The boat has one of those motor mounts that has the cooler on the face as well and that was plugged solid, had to drill the fittings out and beat it on the ground until it all cleared out. I'm assuming the rudder has the same kind of crap in it. I'll have to make it a habit to blow the lines out after using the boats from now on.

                              Yes.
I think the motor mount cooler needs some modding to it,
                              For better flow through it.
Or just do not us it.
