New to the OSE Forums...Saying hello!

    Hello everyone,

Im new to the OSE forums(well, been reading up for a couple months now) and finally got my boat modded to the point where I wasn't embarrassed about it being stock....lol. Even though "stock" it ran a cool 51.2mph on gps

    51.2gps.jpg

So I have a Traxxas Spartan 2nd gen, but I have already added an extended, dual water pickup rudder and am running two separate cooling lines for the motor and ESC, 2 sets of adjustable trim tabs, aluminum water jacket, x442 prop and running it on 6S. That 51.2mph was actually BONE STOCK with none of these mods at all. I actually didn't see an increase at all with x442 prop which was weird, so I went ahead and ordered a beast of a motor, along with a 180a marine esc. I was inspired by a dude named Rinski on some of the forums as well as youtube to get my Spartan at or near the 70mph mark as he was successful in getting up there. I wont spill the beans yet of the new motor, but will post up a pic of it along with the prop I will be running. (I'm sure some of you veterans to the sport will recognize the motor manufacturer, but I'm not talking specs on it just yet until I can film a successful run with the new setup). I was told with confidence by the shop owner who hooked me up with this motor(which will be pushing 5.5HP from what he said) that IF AND ONLY IF I can manage to keep the light hulled Spartan IN the water, I should be at or over the 70 mph mark

and yes, that's and X450 S/B prop in that bag!!!

Well, I look forward to learning a lot more from you guys here on this forum and will update my progress as often as I can. My ESC should be arriving tomorrow or Monday(I hate ordering from overseas.....stuff takes FOREVER to get here).

        Thanks guys!!!

And, OOPS, I just realized I might've put this in the wrong forum? I just didn't really see a "introduce yourself" thread. Maybe it should've gone in the Spartan specific section(If there even is one...lol)

            Welcome.
Any time someone mentions that their motor is rated at xx HP, I assume that they've been talking with Chris Fine.

70mph is fast, I wish you luck. Hopefully you will find that it's not as hard as it may seem to be.
Keep in mind that as you go up in RPM and load, your motor is going to get more and more inefficient. I mention this because I repeatedly see people run extreme RPM and prop setups to go 70mph, all while giving their parts an unneccesary beating. They get 70mph, but with setups that mathematically should be capable of over 80mph. I can't tell you how many people I have seen run 2200kv on 6s, only to get the speeds they should be getting with 5s.

Start slow (small prop, lower voltage if possible) and learn how to get the boat properly aired out first, then once you get it running light, slowly add speed and power, making adjustments along the way.

If you do this you will have a faster and more efficient boat than you would have if you just tossed it into the water all-out.

OK, so she's gone under the knife today......hopefully it'll be finished by tomorrow and I'll be sure to post up some pics of the finished project followed by video of it's maiden run. We're either going to see a stupidly fast Spartan, or some hilarious footage of a massive blowover!

So I finally got the boat all finished up and took it for a spin today in between thunderstorms.......Im pretty bummed by the results to say the least. So, with timing set to 15, the boat did a whopping 42mph I upped the timing to 22.5 and got a max of 56.7 mph. Yea, she's faster than stock but NOWHERE near what I was expecting or told, for that matter. It's a 1450kv 6pole massive motor and Im running the X450 prop which is pretty big so I was told it would be a 70 mph boat, but obviously not. Oh and even with the higher timing setting, the hottest temp I saw at the bullet connector of 121 degrees. The motor and ESC were both right around 107-111 degrees after running the batteries all the way to LVC. Anybody got any ideas or input??

Welcome to the forum! Please ask on the different forums about opinions to reach a desired speed! Don't rely on just one shop owner because as you can see sometimes it doesn't work out especially when it comes to motors putting out horsepower. Lots of tools to figure speed estimates on here, easy to use too!

I'll tell you what.......this is my first rc boat ever and after not so much what I've read, but more from my own personal experience with THIS boat, the NUMBER ONE lesson I have learned is FORGET RTR boats!!! Taking into account every dollar I have spent on the Spartan plus all the upgrades, I'd have one sweet built FE boat that's way faster and NOT PLASTIC......My new mission is trying to figure out how to get into another boat WITHOUT the wife catching on ...hahaha(I know, I know, IMPOSSIBLE)

So after speaking with the particular shop who sold me this motor and a dream, I'm being told basically that my lipos are the issue and they are "not up the job". I wouldn't have a hard time believing this if they sucked on my stock setup, but these are the same lipos that just the other day had the Spartan running in the 48-51mph range consistently and now all of a sudden on the new motor/esc/prop combo with the timing set at 15 like I was told, its in the low 40s mph range and the batteries are to blame??? I obviously don't understand much about this rc boating stuff if this is a true statement. Can anyone here shed some light on this statement other than "your lipos suck, my motor rocks and should have you in the 70 mph range"????
