Greasing the drive cable....

How much grease do you need to put on the drive cable? Thick/glop it on.....or just enough to lubricate/coat the drive shaft

Extra grease is extra drag, don't need a very thick film of lubricant to prevent metal to metal contact. I also find if I end up with to much grease it spins it out of the stuffing tube and makes a mess both inside and at the transom. Doesn't seem to do that on all my boats though.

I good layer then I like to dribble some oil on it. Makes for a nice slick mix.

Grimacer grease is great. I gOb it on. It breaks down quickly and the excess will exit anyhow.

Grimracer, i also use chainsaw bar oil as its thinner than any grease but very sticky.

I usuall agree with Mark, but I'm in the grease to the max school, at least with a new stuffing tube and/or flex drive, I slather the flex shaft with Lithium grease (marine grease is good too). Put enough grease in the tube to push it out the motor end with the flex shaft. Rotate & move the shaft in & out to coat everything.

Tighten up the shaft & wipe off excess grease. It will fling off excess grease on the first run. Wipe off the grease splattered inside the hull with solvent. Future runs will only need a little cleanup.

On the other hand, if you remove & re-grease the flex drive at the end of the day (as you should), a thin coat of grease is OK. JIM
