I've seen one race with a 35cc Mathe engine. It was quite heavy but did okay in rough water. I don't know if they all are heavy or if it was the gas build. You never lose sight of it on a racecourse though.......

I looked into one ( a thunderbolt ) before picking up a drifter xl.
Supposedly it's quite heavy (12+ pounds) and the glass is a bit thin in spots. It's also not really built to handle speeds higher than 55-60 mph. Gel coat is quite rough too.
As for powering a 60" cat, i'm building mine with a pair of plettenberg 370/50/A1S motors, a pair of schulze 40/160 esc's and four flightpower 10s 4350mah packs wired in paralell. Propshop 5518 props at 30,000 rpm.
A 40" to 50" cat is way cheaper to build !

they must have a different Thunderbolt molds at Expresscraft...
I have one, and let me tell you, it weights 8 pounds naked and the gel coat is pretty darn good... just to be fair, I'll take a look at it tomorrow in the sunlight to be sure that it is in deed smooth and to check for weak spots (that I believe are not there).
The one you saw (or mine) may have been from an older batch... BTW it measures 50".:::::::::::::::. It's NEVER fast enough! .:::::::::::::::Comment

I looked at the hull in the sunlight today,
it looks like the layup is even throughout the build.
I am not sure they do wet on wet to join the top and bottom...
it seems they worked the joint a bit, but it was a good job,
it is solid and smooth all the way around... some minor sanding
done, nothing major at all.
It measures 50x16x7 --> give or take a fraction or two.:::::::::::::::. It's NEVER fast enough! .:::::::::::::::Comment
