The balls to the wall open series meant any motor and battery power...spec racing is great as it comes down to skill.....open is innovative and you still have to finish to win, the turtle may cross the line first!
Exactly! Leave SPEC alone! It is a low cost power system that lets people run in a very competitive class that otherwise may not get into the hobby. Personally I think they are the most fun classes!

It already does happen, Sean Kewley aka LUCKY DUC took his beautiful Ducati themed Whiplash 20 powered by a Medusa motor on 4s1p 5000mah and took 2nd place in P sport hydro, then swapped in a UL1 motor and took 1st in P spec sport hydro, all at the 2010 Nats.
Becouse you then have to set parameters for motor length and diameter...then let's see there is the #of poles and whether it be and in runner or out. It leaves the door to wide open. Simple has always been better in spec'ing out a class.
Steve, the point is that you could use a speed control for many classes. The brushless motors do not need all that brush break in stuff that makes one motor differant than others. I know it is hard to acept only a few manufactures( I was very resistant to this myself) but it has been working very well. Sean is from our club, he built his own boat, used an off the shelf motor and 1 p of cells( not even the must have race cell brand) and went to his first nats in his 1st full year of racing and won the biggest most hottly contested class of the 2010 nats. All the big names, all the medium names and a lot of the small names all competed but he won. He finished with 3 firsts and 1 second. I think this proves this formula works. You do not need the best stuff, 2 p or to be sponsored to win a very competive class. It wasn't easy but it was done. I think this is encouragement for all people to try and race.
The problem with racing 700 motors today is the cost. We soon discovered that the 700 motors can't handle the power supplied by LiPo cells. Heck, we were burning out 700s regularly on 4200 NiMH cells. You'll be buying a new 700 motor several times a year, and only one competitive motor is still available (700SC).
Cost for one year's racing:
UL-1 motor = $58
Three 700SC motors = $135
Plus you'll still be 5-10 mph behind a comparable BL setup and losing power every lap.....

At a club level a Spec cat class could be a gob of fun too.
Once P Spec gets in the book as a power parrameter we'll all know what it means. Maybe the power parrameter should just be called "spec" instead of "P Spec" Might be less confusing.
Come on guys. Brushed or brushless doesn't matter on burning things up. We all know motors dont burn themselves up, the users push them to a point of failure. You can burn any motor if pushed to hard.
I'm still using 700 boats with 4s lipo packs with no problems. They are faster then ever. Now dont get me wrong, those boats with 700 motors where built several years ago. When building a boat today I would opt for a brushless over brushed.
