This is really no different than in the days of the 700 can LSH motors. The only competitive motors were the SS-1 and the 700SC. Once they were out of stock, there were no good LSH motors to be had. Motors will be added or removed as they were in the past, just like the N-1 ROAR stock motors are.
If we open the class to a bunch of "spec" motors, then the whole advantage of motor parity evaporates. The nice thing about the class is the limited number of legal motors. (Actually you can get almost the same speed in an LSH with a BJ26 motor as you can with the UL-1 motor - 2 mph is the difference I logged for safe setups. It just takes a bit more experimenting with props. If I had two months to wait for a magic UL-1 motor, I'd be experimenting with the BJ26 mill......)
.
Just to make certain I understand this(Just spent my first weekend in a formal race environment). An insane hydro would run under the P LSH class only if it had a UL-1 motor for instance. If it ran with a (non-specified) motor what class would it run under? P Hydro? By the way Jay, I have a UL-1 motor sitting on my work bench that I am fine with "loaning" to you for the race you have coming up if you need it.
Jim: The Insane FE-30 is legal for LSH and P-Sport Hydro classes. All it takes is a different motor to change classes. The LSH class specifies the common "spec" motors listed above. (At this time there is no official NAMBA or IMPBA ruling on any BL motors in LSH but let's not go there now).
LSH - Limited Spec Hydro - any of the listed "spec" motors in a "sport" hull. P-Sport Hydro - any motor in a "sport" hull.....you 'could' even run an LSH boat in P-Sport class. P-Hydro - any motor / any hydro hull....either P-Sport or LSH boats 'could' run here too.
Thanks for the offer on the UL-1 motor, but I'm covered. You could put it in your Insane and see how it works.....

LSO = Limited Spec Offshore (which imho is redundant).
Andy
Andy, LSO is now PLO P-limited offshore! Don't shoot me....I don't like acronyms! This is something I heard in MI...not sure what the legal name really is.
No one runs Limited Sport Hydro anymore - in fact no current boats racing on the club or National level are legal in that class. We have taken to calling it "P-Spec Limited Hydro" or "Limited Spec Hydro" so as not to confuse those new folks who actually read the rule books and then ask about those hard-to-find 700 brushed motors. "Limited Sport Hydro" is as dead as a door nail....

I think the names should be fixed, actually, preferably by creating a power standard for P-Spec that can be applied to all mono/hydro classes as well. I pushed for that when we came up with LSH in the beginning. I sure hope it gets fixed.
All I can say is, as a beginner to racing (I have been running boats for 3 years now for fun) it is VERY confusing when you read the NAMBA book and then look at this thread. Things do not seem to match up. Just giving some feedback as someone who is looking at all of this for the very first time. I am certain the goal is to make it as simple and fair to the people racing as possible. Thanks for answering my questions on this Jay.

That is what I was doing. Reading and reading the Namba rules looking for the specified motors like the UL-1, but no where in the books?? Is it just a "hand shake" agreement amoungst the clubs on which motors are allowed??

In a sense, yes. It's taken quite a bit of time to figure out what to do with what is the most popular power class in FE right now.
But that's how NAMBA works. You just don't throw out a proposal until you've got a ton of buy-in and testing with many clubs and districts.
It's written, but it won't go public until 1st qtr of 2011. With regards to the P-Limited section, it will be proposed that P-Limited be it's own Power Parameter, with specific motors listed as legal. SV, BJ, HiMaxx, UL, and the 1800 Kv motors coming out w/the Aquacraft Cat and the Stiletto Tunnel. Plus, there is wording in there that the CD can allow other motors that mirror these (Kv, dimensional, amp rating, etc) if they put it on the race flyer.
If this proposal is successful, it's what will be legal for P-Limited NAMBA sanctioned racing.
I may be way of base...no surprise....legal motors, batteries etc for a spec class and then a balls to the wall open class on the same hulls...that would be fun to watch and inovative

Yes,when I first read through the rules I thought it was pretty simple. You have class like "P" which tells you, the Maximum voltage, Maximum length. Then you have the hull type. I figured the rest was up to you. All you are left with is the motor selection and of course the type of boat within a hull type. Seems pretty straight forward, and then the motor issue would just work itself out as racer's figure out which motors worked best and what hulls worked best.
Like I said, I am new to racing and I am sure others here with many years of experience have found that this formula is not always the best. By the way this has been a great thread.
Scratch this ramble. I was looking through what Ray wrote up and the "P-Hydro - any motor / any hydro hull....either P-Sport or LSH boats 'could' run here too." Is probably exactly what I just described!
I hope we don't start opening up the spec classes to a zillion different motors! As I see it, the spec classes are like the IROC series. Everyone has to run the SAME thing! We have the choice of four different motors now and I hope it stays that way. Anything outside of those motors will go into P classes, period.

It already does happen, Sean Kewley aka LUCKY DUC took his beautiful Ducati themed Whiplash 20 powered by a Medusa motor on 4s1p 5000mah and took 2nd place in P sport hydro, then swapped in a UL1 motor and took 1st in P spec sport hydro, all at the 2010 Nats.
