    Burnt out motor

    Hi all

Firstly a newbie here, and a very newby to electric boats, i run 2 stroke boats and recently my friend and i decided to venture into a once off build electric boat
    Hull is a Osprey
motor - GoolRC 160A Brushless ESC and 4092 1250KV Motor
    ESC - 160A GoolRC
    Battery - 22v 6000ma 6S

ok first off, no program card could be found for this ESC
so we tried the setup as is. motor spluttered 3 times, revved up and seemed to get on the plane.............. and then there was nothing
opened the hatch and out came the magic smoke
    The motor seems burnt out
please help, what did we do wrong and what should we do next.
i tried to add the small video, but not sure yet to do it here.

Never run a new ESC without validating the setup! There has to be something on the web about this ESC. If not, always buy an ESC that you can fully support. Sorry your first day out wasn’t very good... But get this ironed out and I’m sure you will enjoy the boat!

Oh BTW, it’s really rare for a motor to burn that fast and put out a lot of smoke. That is usually an ESC, so check everything carefully to be sure..

      Hi Craig

I spend a crazy amount of time trying to find info on the GoolRC ESC, GoolRC offers zero after sale service nor do they provide any tech docs on the combo.. school fee's
not even a GoolRC email address, i eventialy tried the patent holder and got to TomTop, and there the trail ended. i think i should have done more homework on GoolRc before i bought there product.
      wont make that mistake again.
i bought a Hobbywing LCD programmer and some other's, none of them would recocnize the GoolRC ESC.

Man, that’s a tough lesson! I do a lot of web research on new ESC’s I haven’t used before to get opinions. I know, too late now... I know you’ll love ripping that boat, so don’t get discouraged!

I did find this programming card...

Everything I see says these ESC’s are for cars. Is this a marine ESC?

This is one return from a google search. The reviewer refers to the ESC as Hobbystar requiring a PC to programme. I have previously read reference to the Goolrc ESC as being a rebranded ZTW. This is applicable for a car ESC, however, the basics would also apply to a marine ESC as well.

While referring to a car ESC the instructions info may be helpful.

Just sucks that products are put into the market without proper tech docs and newbies like me fall in the trap, does not do much for the hobby.
Motor and ESC arrived without as much as a single piece of paper. I could have bought a nice 2 stroke and could have had a happy weekend. Instead i now have to splash cash again. This time around not without proper home work, my bad.

I would be surprised if it is the motor toasted as when released those over in the UK were very supportive of the performance from the Goolrc motors. A lot of Google references are for a sensored ESC, so I am wondering if perhaps the seller has mixed up a sensored motor with a non-sensored ESC or vice versa.

I am aware this is for a car ESC from Hobbystar, however, these instructions may help, if not a little too late.

With a focus on quality products and customer support, the business strives to provide the best deals to RC enthusiasts.

Edit: I read this in the instructions -

                              "Sensored Mode:
When using a Sensored Brushless motor, the Blue motor wire A, the Yellow motor wire B and the
Orange motor wire C of the ESC must be connected with the Sensored motor wire A,B,C
respectively. It is necessary to connect the Sensor wire to the "Sensor" socket on the ESC. It is
important to not alter the order of motor wires when using with a sensored motor.

                              Sensorless Mode:
When using a Sensorless Brushless motor, the Blue motor wire A, the Yellow motor wire B and the
Orange motor wire C of the ESC can be connected with the motor wires in any order. If the motor
runs in the opposite direction, please swap any two wire connections.

                              Connection to the Receiver
                              Black wire RXRed
                              wire RX+6.0V
                              White wire RX-Signal

                              LEDs:
                              Sensored/sensorless function
When the Power wires on the ESC are connected with the battery pack, the ESC can automatically
identify the motor type (Sensored/Sensorless) via indicated LEDs. Sensored cable must be
removed for ESC to operate in sensorless mode."
