Hmmm.... I am lost, I think I wan to just run what I have and see what I get. If it blows then I have my Castle Ice on stand by along the leopard. I am tooooo tired to think anymore! Time to hit the hay, night and thanks for your help!
Props on 5s!

Brand new stock one, I don't know if the stock ESC can handle the 4 pole leopard due to it's larger can size.
1800Kv 3.5D does this make a difference over a 2Y motor with the same kv? I think I want to do a 1800kv motor on the ICE 200 Install paired with an X442 or P215.Last edited by Spartanator; 05-04-2014, 02:04 PM.Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!

I run a CC1515 and turnigy T180 ESC with X442 prop and a .078 wire drive in one of my Spartans.
It has been reliable for two seasons running 4 and 5S only.
I know you can find you tube videos of guys running this setup on 6S, but I question how long the ESC lasts.
I agree that 6S with the 1515 in the Spartan is too much.

That will most likely be what happens with mine, at least motor wise... I can't decide if I should sell the Ice 200 for a $45ish profit or keep it. I also have to keep in mind that I have another Seaking ESC coming in the Summer. So at the moment I have the following parts electronic wise:
1 stock setup (has a few mods)
1 Leopard 4082 1600kv
1 Ice 200 V2 (On the way)
1 Seaking ESC-Have NO IDEA what it will be...
Maybe the leopard will go good with the Ice 200. dag-nabit- What speeds are you getting, it's ok if it's a guesstimate... I have also seen some of the videos but I also don't have there story of the ESC lasting... I wouldn't do 6s again, just seems too much for this boat... Ok, maybe if I went with the Ice 200 and leo I can do 6s...?
Here is more food for though on my part: Maybe I just sell the stockerish system for $175ish and use the Iced Leopard setup on 4s, 5s, and 6s... We will just see how much money I make this Summer at the fuel dock! Not being on the water with our 1:1 is killing me, I see all the Donzis and Cigarettes pass by and it is driving me a-wall!
back to the point, I think i am going to keep what I have and see what it can do or lack of what it can't do... I think the stock ESC should be able to use an x440 on 5s with a wire drive. It will be pushing a load though with a total mah of 12,400 5s2p. Just had a thought- Spartan on 10s!Last edited by Spartanator; 05-04-2014, 05:53 PM.Why are you bothering me? Going to keep the stockerish stuff for now, if a part blows I will just sell the part that didn't and throw what ever part blew up.... I will keep the Ice 200 unless I run into some sort of $ troubles and use it a leopard 4082 1800kv (no typo) on 4s, 5s, and 6s with a CC cap pack installed. In my mind Traxxas should have sent this boat out with an x440 and put 40MPH on the box... I plan to sell my future ESC that I receive from Seaking/Hobbyking. I still have to get 2 3s lipos in late may so I can have a total of 3 sets of 5s. I know I am "wishy washy" on this but hey, it's not set in stone... That other fella in the thread didn't seem to happy that I got the ESC...
Still waiting on my wire drive and I think I want another pump for the motor. If anyone is curios to what pump it is: THIS ONELast edited by Spartanator; 05-04-2014, 08:26 PM.Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!

The other Spartan has been running a leopard 4082 1600, t180, and P220 prop with .187 flex cable.
Both boats run high 40's low 50's according to GPS.
Both have proven reliable setups. The cc1515 on 5s is running about the same unloaded rpm as the stock spartan on 6s. So with the x442 prop it theoretically performs very similar to the stock Spartan.
I tried more than a few different motor / prop combos before settling on the two setups we run. This includes running larger props on the 4082 1600 setup.
The conclusion I reached was 50 mph on the Spartan was reasonably about as fast as you want to go.
It gets unstable with chine walk at 50 and gets worse at higher speeds. Larger props exacerbate torque roll. And repair and maintenance is more frequent the harder you push things.
In the end, we have to remember, it is a plastic boat.
Enjoy modifying and trying various setups, but in the end we opted for reliability and having fun running, over fetching and fixing overturned and performance stressed boats.

Maybe I should put two outboards on it and call it a day... I want to do a double or triple outboard build someday!
But back to it: I want a reliable boat but I like the formality of the stock stuff such as how the stock esc pops in and doesn't have to be programmed. Also I noticed when I did an initial range test with stock electronics vs SK Leopard I lost about 150FT, that was with the same TQi setup. I have a third channel TX now for when I get leds again. I like 50mph and mine was pretty stable unless it was windy. Just gotta wait and see what blows! Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate the input.
And yep, it's a plastic boat but for a beginner I don't want to destroy a high dollar fiber glass hull. Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!

The Spartan has one feature that keeps me hooked... The removable tray. It makes it so easy to work on. It does limit component placement, but most boats are pretty tight for component placement anyway.
As for my plastic boat comment, I only meant it has it limits on stress endurance. There have been a couple guys have folded the hull in half pushing it hard, and that was mid run, not wiping out. And the deck will separate from the hull if hammered too hard.
My experience is target approx. 50 mph max and it can be a pretty reliable boat. And it is fun to run.

Have you checked your hull/deck for separation. If it starts to separate, even just 1/2" or so, water will get in. If it is separating it can be a challenge to find an adhesive that will bind and repair the hull. Since the hull is ABS plastic, regular plastic model cement doesn't work, nor does super glue. ABS cement used on plumbing fittings should work, but it is yellow in color, messy, and dries super fast, so I haven't tried it. There is a product called plastic weld that reportedly works well, but I haven't found it available in Canada so can't confirm how well it works.
I modded my hatch by filling in the rear "tabs" then cutting them flush with the stern of the boat. This allows me to tape the hatch and seal it fully. Keeps water out, and prevents the hatch from ejecting in a wipe out.
Tabs filled in with fiberglass, cut and filed flush.

Finished hatch mod, with tabs removed you can tape the back of the hatch for a waterproof seal.

I checked the hull but the only place water comes in now is the back of the hatch where the pin is...Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!

Odd that you would get any amount of water coming in through the pin hole, especially if running.
If standing still in the water, or using reverse, and waves are breaking over the back of the boat I could see it filling up, but not if you have forward motion.
Do you tape your hatch?

It's only when it's flipped upside down, I put items in there that carried more wait than all the stuff installed just to see. I don't tend to play in waves, I lack in recovery. I tape my hatch, have been since I got off Ni-mh!
Sidenote, I just got another boat!!! Formula FASTech Brushless that is in NIB- PITA to find but well worth it, especially when you there is a Formula 1:1 hangin' out back! Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!

Who likes that little pump feature? I run it off a 9V (rated for 12V) but once it gets up to speed it sends out a 1ft stream! I am going to get one for the motor too! Anyways not a bad run today, I just need to bring the strut down a little because I have some serious cavitation going on... My wire drive from Jeff comes in tomorrow (I was finally convinced to get one) and will be putting my X442 on there, I was running the x440 today and had some nice speed but not enough "grip" All in all---Good, until I rolled it (windy day) but at least my neighbor was coming in from the fuel docks... It did take on water but not a substantial amount. I think these lipos are too heavy for this hull but at least I get 10 minutes! Why are you bothering me? I want to see your boat!
