You have options.
As you suggested, run the OEM strut with your .187 wire drive. I run this setup on one Spartan, Haven't replaced a wire drive in two seasons. I find the strut lasts about a season.
Or you can go to either a .087 wire drive, or .150 cable with a "standard" 3/16" stub shaft and run the OSE strut. (I'm not sure if you can get a 3/16" stub with .187 flex??)
I run a wire drive in the other Spartan with OEM strut, with pretty much the same result, about a season out of the strut. I think the wire drive may wear the bushings a bit quicker because of the stiffness of the wire.
Note: I find the wire drives easier to cut to length than flex cables, if required. The flex cables need to be soldered at the cutoff to prevent unraveling, and I find them very difficult to solder properly.
