Need Best Replacement ESC for Spartan Advice

Motor timing is relative to the motors wind type. Y wind motors will like higher timing 7.5 - 15 and D wind motors will like lower timing 0 - 7.5. The motor wind will determine what your timing should be, run a D wind on high timing and the amp's and heat will spike and power and efficiency will decrease, same if you run a Y wind on low timing. The motor makers will list the motor type.

They're is not that I know off and from looking at HK. I also am not sure which software load is comes with the Hifei 120 and 240 from HK. I know that the HK version of the Hifei program box is tweeked to say turnigy on the start-up screen and the Hifei one says something different I'm not sure what all HK tweeked, but the functions and interface is the same, just the start up menu is different.

FYI: My HW programming card came with the car sticker attached, however both the boat ESC sticker and the aircraft ESC sticker were in the package - see attached. As you can see, the backing card is a fold over type deal, they were in the middle of it.

I punched out the things where the buttons go - then layed the template on top of the box & programmed my boat ESC, 4-options only takes a couple minutes. Left the car sticker on because I have HW BL motor on the way for my Stampede, already have the HW ESC for it, car ESC's have lot more options; going to take experimenting to get it dialed in.

I bought mine from HobbyPartz.com - cost = $15, HOWEVER -- HobbyPartz offers free shipping on orders of $50 or more (they also take PayPal). So if your ordering several items, then HP's price could end up being less because of the savings on shipping costs.

Look at the bottom of the spec table, says FSD - does the letter "D" at the end indicate that it is a "D" wind motor?? I'm still relatively new to BL, I have learned alot, but I'm by no means an expert, thus any help will be much appreciated - thanks.

Tacon I'm pretty sure is a also a made up name. Nitromodels and all there different sister sites use to get away from the manfactures MAP pricing. You have to find the oem maker . I see "FSD" listed in the specs under "Design for". I will check fsd's site and see if I can find anything out. FSD motors are typcially Y wind.

Well, got the Seaking 180a Installed!

I buttoned up the installation of the HW Seaking 180a this morning and I'm charging up to go out and test. One thing I noted that was different with this ESC than all the pictures I've seen is an extra bank of 4 caps (see picture between rx box and esc). Seems to be very high quality and looks awesome. I used the programmer to set it up for forward/rev, manual cell count (6), Timing at 15*, and lvc at 3.2V. Also, if you get this one, don't forget to set the full throttle position. I ended up shortening the CC motor leads about 2.75". I'll post the temps and speeds once I get back from the lake. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Update: Ran two sets of Zippys through it back to back. Hit 53.7mph so a tad slower than my previous runs, but some of that was probably wind/water conditions. Everything stayed relatively cool. ESC was 111*, Caps were 117* at the end of the second run. Batteries 115*. Motor 85*. It definitely has a different sound and very smooth acceleration. Seems like we are back in business.

Alright, ran my Spartan on 6s for the first time today. Very fast. One problem. After the first run, the ESC caps were hot to the touch. I let it cool down and ran a second set of batteries. Open the hatch and saw a little puff come from the ESC. Everything still works, but I can't take the chance of putting it back in the water with that ESC. I'm going to send it out for replacement from Castle with the bulged caps, but I want a bulletproof ESC. I need one that can handle the stock motor on 6s. I already have all the cooling mods done. I don't plan on using anything other than stock (x442 S&B) props and I want to keep the 1800KV Castle Motor. What can handle the heat? Seaking? Turnigy? Castle?
BTW, 57.4mph on 6s this morning.

Bulging caps are a clear sign that your batts are having a hard time delivering the current the system is trying to draw (aka ripple current). A bank of extra caps should solve it or increasing the capacity or C rating of the packs.

EDIT: Nevermind...saw the additional caps on the other controller did the trick. :)

Great job, like your selection of Trax waterproof rx box instead of using rx condom, gives it a professional look & much stronger, lot easier to work on too. Did you use the HW prog card to set it up?? I like those, makes the job SO MUCH easier, ESPECIALLY with car ESC's.

I just finished upgrading my Trax Stampede to BL, used HW 3000Kv motor & 60a ESC. Still new to BL, so was having issues getting the end points dialed in (Tactic TTX-240), but she's done now. Still have to fine tune the programming, no biggie.

Wheelies?? - More like - try keeping the front wheels on the ground - that was on a 8.4v hump batt. I'll get pix tomorrow & put them in the gallery.

I like that combo so much that I'm getting that motor + HW 60a marine ESC for my AQ Rio. I LIKE THIS BRUSHLESS stuff!! This is FUN

The Spartan is delivered from the factory like that. They do have their problems but they did get several things right.
