Need Best Replacement ESC for Spartan Advice

Alright, ran my Spartan on 6s for the first time today. Very fast. One problem. After the first run, the ESC caps were hot to the touch. I let it cool down and ran a second set of batteries. Open the hatch and saw a little puff come from the ESC. Everything still works, but I can't take the chance of putting it back in the water with that ESC. I'm going to send it out for replacement from Castle with the bulged caps, but I want a bulletproof ESC. I need one that can handle the stock motor on 6s. I already have all the cooling mods done. I don't plan on using anything other than stock (x442 S&B) props and I want to keep the 1800KV Castle Motor. What can handle the heat? Seaking? Turnigy? Castle?
BTW, 57.4mph on 6s this morning.

First of all congradulations on the 6s run! MY esc caps are always hot after a run but the esc its self is only warm if that. The caps are not so hot I cant touch them but the stock nimh batteries are almost to melt down after a run, which I dont understand. The 5000 mah and 8.400 mah lipos I run get only warm after a hard run. Wow you saw smoke!

T180 is rock solid and cool running in this setup and has been used in every modified spartan setup I have seen posted so far. Can be had at HK for $85 delivered.

Thanks for the advice guys. Are there any major differences between the Swordfish and T-180? Oh, and Warlock, I touched the caps after the first run and got a little hiss from my moisture on my fingers. It was hot hot.

I've ordered the T-180 and programming card. If anybody else wants one, I've posted a buddy code in the sales/coupons forum where you can pick one up for $75.02 and the programming card for about $5. It looks eerily similar to the Seaking 180. Is this just a China carbon? Or is the Seaking a rebadge of the Turnigy product? It's getting harder and harder to tell these days. If anyone's set one of these up for the Spartan, feel free to share the details of your setup with me.

All I know is those I have seen installed and used are the HK ones and never have I heard of a failure yet in the Spartan setup. The first run of boats were a disaster as most all know and several put in the T180 along with many types of motors ranging from 1300kv to 2200kv and even then it held up no problem. I have submerged mine on numerous occasions without any waterproofing and it just keeps on going.

Wow...I haven't even run my Spartan yet (picked it up after our 2 month summer had past), but I'm not one for failures so I'm thinking about scoring one of these. Sounds solid!

Looking as how it's going to be a couple weeks before the T180 arrives from China, I went ahead and ordered a Seaking 180 from OSE. It will be here quickly and from what I can tell, the two are the exact same thing. I may just sell the T180 when it gets here or keep it for a backup.

Looking at the leads on the Seaking 180a and the leads off the stock Spartan motor, which ones should I shorten? The stock ESC just had plugs so the motor leads are extra long. Is that extra length going to hurt anything? What do you guys think?

I see you already went with the Seaking 180, but for future reference the swordfish 200A ESC does not have a battery eliminator circuit (BEC) so you have to run a separate battery pack to power the receiver and servo. there are many enthusiasts who feel that running a separate battery pack when running 6S is a good idea anyway because it helps take some amp load off the ESC.

                      Kevin

EDIT: My apologies, the 200a DOES have a BEC, I was thinking of 240a ESC when I was typing my response.

I'm not an expert on this, so perhaps someone else will clear up the loose ends.

I have read that it depends on the type of windings on the motor whether or not you can trim the motor leads or not. If you are not certain, trim the ESC leads to play it safe.

Has something to do with total resistance in the windings. If I recall correctly??

It is also my understanding (based again on what I have read), if you do trim the motor leads, cut them EXACTLY the same length.

I wonder if theirs a misprint on the Turnigy specs re the brake setting as they also have ommited the lipo numbers setting. Ive been told that these 2 esc are the same,Its also been said a number of times on this forum that they are indeed the same esc. I have both of these & HW prog card but i havnt used the Turnigy esc yet but will try it on the HW card soon. Martin

I'm going to have one of each soon and may just do a write-up on them. My HW shows up today thank God. The T180, it could be a month as HK hasn't even packed it yet. As for the leads, I'm going to see how long everything is when I have it mounted. Any ideas on a good starting setup for timing? I've seen 11* somewhere on here. Dagnabit, what timing are you running on yours?

It depends what esc's you are using. Turnigy is made up name. HK is just re-branding it.

These are the same and the same program card will work. Also note that even the program cards that have the car esc setting displayed on the card will also work on the boat esc's. The program cards just have different stickers, but work the same. The programming differences are inside the esc (i.e the car esc's have more programmable features)

                              Same Hobbywing esc's:

                              Turnigy Marine 60: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Boat_ESC.html
                              Hobbywing 60: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...ker-seaking-60

                              Turnigy Marine 120:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Boat_ESC.html
                              Hobbywing 120: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...er-seaking-120

                              Turnigy Marine 180:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Boat_ESC.html
                              Hobbywing 180:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...er-seaking-180

Programming cards will work on all these esc's:

                              HK: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=7187
                              Hobbywing:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...-seaking-pcard

                              * IF the esc's says "Turnigy MARINE series it is a Hobbywing Seaking esc. ALso if you click on Turnigy 180 esc and look under the "Files" section you can download the front templete for esc different esc and stick onto the fron of your program box. Note that the price is cheaper on the esc's from HK then from OSE, but shipping will be A LOT less to the US from OSE and also A LOT quicker shipping time.

These are also the same esc's:

                              Turnigy Aquastar 120:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ooled_ESC.html
                              Hifei Swordfish 120: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...=hef-sword-120

                              Turnigy Aquastar 240HV:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...oled_ESC_.html
                              Hifei Swordfish 240HV:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...ef-sword-240hv

                              * Steve has the updated HV esc's with the dual waterplates. Esc's are the same. The Turnigy Aquastar is the Hifei swordfish esc's.

Hobbyking re-brands everything to avoid manufactor MAP prices. Turnigy is a made up name, but the model name i.e marine or aquastar will give you a indication to who the actual maker is.
