Traxxas 11.1v 8.400 mah lipos are HUGE

Well UPS just delivered a pair of Traxxas 11.1v 8.400 mah batteries that make the 5000 mah's look like AA's . I may play with the battery location some but to start with I will run them in the forward position and the extra weight of the big lipos are going to make it ride a little lower in the water. Probobly not a bad thing actually. A bit longer run times are hoped for. Since I use the Spartan for almost daily entertainmant for the special needs kids where I work, the bigger batteries should allow for a few minutes extra time. I dont suppose they will make it run faster. I want to see if there is a performance improvement even with the extra weight over the 5000's, or not. I will take video if some one is around that can do it for me while I run the boat.

See if you can take a picture of them next to your 5000s. I'd like to see the difference. I experimented with some trim tab/drive strut settings yesterday as well as some battery placement. My Spartan was way too low in the water, but I got it up on top and it was screamin. There was definitely a little more instability, but it was manageable even with some wind and chop. Even saw my first chine walk, but the second set of trim tabs kept it minor and it even corrected itself under full throttle.

I'll try to remember to bring my camera to work tomorrow and take those pictures for ya. I keep the boat at work. But you can see todays first run on the 11.1v 8.400's You can see in the video that I was on the "gas" a LOT. I ran it till the ESC cut me down to bring it to shore as you can see. It popped a wheelie in the water, not sure whats really called but holy crap! Did a couple spin outs and recovered no sweat. My boat is un touched other than the lipos, no adjustments at all to the boat........yet.

Man, you sure have that thing running nice! I'm not sure I would change a thing performance-wise. I mean obviously the cooling mods would be nice because you are definitely getting some long 6s runtimes now. I also did that mod where you stick a rubber grommet between the strut and transome. All of the grease stayed in the stuffing tube with the exception of a small drip from the oiling hole on the strut. That's a $2 mod that's well worth it. It's the cleanest and driest (in the hull) my boat has been after a run.

Also, my 5s should show up today but I won't be able to run them until all of my connectors and wires arrive so I can make a parallel connector. Maybe then I'll make a video.

It must be the fact that this new Spartan is my first Spartan, and I have no recollection of the bad times people had with the old model and esc's smoking out and what have you, that doesnt allow me to understand why anyone would not run 6s and excersize some common sense doing so. Truthfully, I ran the hell out of the Spartan on the 6s 8.400's and took the lipos all the way to the esc's cut off, which still cuts off way too soon as the batteries still have over 10 volts after that run. But it acts on the safe side of things apparently. Thats a good thing! The motor was only warm and not anything close to slightly hot, the esc barely warm. All this took place with stock cooling, but I am most definitly going to upgrade that. GTRhino your boat is sweet, I want mine set up like yours, but im leaving the trim tabs alone for now.

Runs great!!!!!..............but the first 30 seconds of all your vids are painful...............LOL

Looks like the extra weight keeps it planted..................do yourself a favor and dont mess with anything, yours runs better than any one of the 1000 i've seen floppin all over the place on youtube.

I have to agree they are damn near spot on out of the box. I trimmed the tabs up a couple degrees along with a couple degrees up on the strut and it went crazy unstable. Fast but unstable. With the strut up about 1/2mm and the inner tabs up 1/2mm and outer up 1mm, it's solid. That's with the batteries at about the 3/4 position forward. I was running wide open 180 turns yesterday on smooth water.

About the grommet fix for the grease getting augered out the stuffing tube. Dag-nabit has a thread that references it along with several other stuffing tube/drive cable changes. I'm using the stock hardware but just added a grommet I picked up at Advance Auto for a couple bucks. After the first run with it, the transome was grease free and the drive cable still had plenty of grease on it. For a couple of bucks and no impact to the performance, this is a no-brainer.

Yeah, I just looked up the prices. What a rip. I'll never overpay for a lipo, again.

Hey you guys arent looking at the Traxxas site for the prices are you? I was going to buy my Spartan directly from them which you can do, but they charge a lot more for everything. In fact the guy I talked to at Traxxas told me there business is selling to hobby shops and such, and thats where the money is. If Traxxas cut there prices, then they might squeeze out some of there steady on going business. And as well he suggested I go to Tower Hobbies as they have every thing Traxxas sells and a lot cheaper. I payed like $75.00 a piece for the 5.000 mah's and the two 8.400's set me back $230.00. I just like Tower because they have been around since the 70's, and I have spent a lot of money with them over the years, I'm sure somebody knows a better place to get them or they know a better brand than Traxxas, and thats good, and also there oppinion.

Only 25c, but they pump out 210 continuous amps..........more than double what the motor pulls.

Warlock...............you may have, or still may, consider two 6s packs to run 6s2p with the same, or more, mah as the 8400's.

Two of these will give you 8000mah and 320 continuous amps for $108 total - http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html

Two of these, 10,000 mah and 400 continuous amp discharge for $118 total! - http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._6S1P_40C.html
