New guy here, First run in my Spartan

Hey guys I'm new here and to FE Boats, Not to R/C in general. I'm an owner of a New Spartan. I got it for Christmas from the wife, before I took her out I decided to do some homework and get familiar with the boat. After being busy with work all week and waiting on my new parts from OSE, I finally took it out on a small pond in my neighborhood. I know there has been alot of issues with this boat, but I think I've got a hang of it and off to a good start. The boat was Ultra smooth, No chine walk, Perfect Balance, and Handled well. Below I've posted some pics of my setup, Nothing special but it works for keeping the temps down.

    Spartan with Stock Castle Equipment
    (2) Traxxas 2S Lipos 25C 5800 MAH
    Leopard 3665XL Aluminum Cooler
Larger Dubro Cooling Lines ( a little big had to use zip ties)
OSE Dual Pick up Rudder in Blue
    OSE Bullet Prop nut
    Traxxas Trim Tab Adjusters
    Twin Water Outlets for Draining

Runtime: 15 Mins with more to spare
Batteries: Took almost 3000 MAH for Full Charge
    Motor Temp: 81 Degrees
    ESC Temp: 77 Degrees
    Batt Temp: 92 Degrees

I would stick to the 4s like you did and even 5s. Don't get caught up in all the 6s hype and you should be just fine. I'm sure people will comment there running 6s and so far so good, but the truth of the matter is the setup provided with the boat is not made for running 6s continuly. The rpm's are just to high. Trust me bud, 4s/5s have fun and keep learning. It's a fun hobby. Happy New Years and welcome to OSE!

Congrats on the new boat! You and I did the exact same things. Wife bought me a boat too and I immediately ordered tons of parts as well as some 4s. I'm hooked already. Tons of great information here too and good guys willing to help out.

Well, my wife knows about how addicted I get with my hobbies. I bought my first Glock in April of last year. I've bought 4 since. 2 of them were 10mm. I started reloading and bought the Dillon press for 10mm and now have my own arsenal. My truck is tricked out. I think she knew very well what she was getting me into. This is by FAR my least expensive hobby so I think she will like this one much more.

Man thats a nice boat! I have a new one too and mine is blue as well but its just as it comes from the box so far. I have done nothing what ever to modify it other than run a set of Traxxas 5000 mah lipos. I also run the stock nimh's to "warm it up". Acutally the nimh's get pretty hot after a hard run though nothing else does at all. Running the lipos hard they get a little warm. So does the motor and the esc is maybe barely warm. I honestly dont understand why some folks worry of that, unless of course you just ran it full out all the time non stop. Who does that? I dont understand all the boat talk yet as I'm new to r/c boats. What is "Chine Walk"?

Here is a video of my boat on the lipos, do I have "Chine Walk" going on? I ran it fairly hard in the video to see how badly the performance would suffer as the lipos drained, but it was marginal and as well to see just how hot everything really gets. But its like I said, the motor was fairly warm after that run but not too hot to touch easily. The lipos were warm too the esc slightly warm. Maybe tomorrow the motor will explode but it sure doesnt sound like it. Once again, you really have a nice Spartan, I would like to fix mine up that way then it would not run warm hardly at all I bet.

Thanks for all of the Input and Compliments guys!! Yeah my wife knew what she was getting me into, LoL!! I am the same way with all of my stuff, I just can't leave anything stock it drives me nutz!!

Warlock, The boat probably didn't need all of the stuff I did for cooling, But with all of the horror stories I read I went ahead and did it all as a Preventative measure. I spent about $80 on all of the cooling equipment, which is cheap compared to buying a New ESC and/or Motor. If your looking to save a couple of bucks, but want to do some cooling mods, go on Youtube and search "Traxxas Spartan Cooling Mods" , RCNightMare did a few videos on some "Budget" cooling mods, all you need to do is get $5 worth of cooling lines, some vacuum T's, and bore out your stock rudder pickup. I am new to the Marine R/C Lingo as well, Chine Walk is when the boat rocks side to side while going straight, Your boat doesnt appear to be doing it.

A quick question for anyone that can answer. I want to run 5S and from what I've read I can do this by running a 2S and 3S together as long as the specs are the same. Is this true? For example I am about to order a 2S1P 40C 5000 MAH Gens Ace and a 3S1P 40C 5000 MAH Gens Ace, in theory running these together will net me 5S 40C 5000 MAH, Correct?

                    Thanks in Advance!!

You would need to parallel 2 5s instead. I'm new too, but I'm pretty sure your packs need to be matched for series. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I just ordered a couple 5s packs yesterday from Hobbyking.

You can get a lot of the cooling mods here on OSE. The rudder is the most expensive piece but I got a direct replacement with dual pickups on Ebay from a seller named Changemaker119 out of FL. It's a pretty sweet rudder with 2 large pickups and uses the factory hardware. As a bonus, it's got a swept front edge and is 1/8" deeper and 1/8" longer than stock. You can get blue or silver. Here's my setup after some extras I added today.
                          Dual intake rudder (Ebay)
                          OSE bulkhead fittings
                          OSE 540XL cooling jacket
                          OSE Large Outlets
                          Kintec Racing water lines

                          Dual Outlets:

                          Rear bulkhead fittings and rudder:

                          Inside transom:

                          Overhead view w/ Cooling Jacket:

Sorry the images are so big.

Man thats beautiful. Tastefully done as well that rudder is awesome, any idea where to get one? I kind of want to not have to drill too many holes in the transome or relocate the rudder. Boy you guys got me thinking.

Hahaha...thanks man. Being obsessive compulsive has its upside sometimes. The only extra holes in my transom are for the splash guard which is well above the waterline. Here is a link to the rudder on eBay. You can search his other items for other colors and the splashguard you see in the pictures above.
