Why do you need a receiver pack when running 7 cells

Does anyone know why need a receiver pack when running 7 cell batteries? I have been running 7 cells in my SV w/o a receiver pack and so far no problems. I saw a warning on the OSE 7 cell ad and was curious.
Will it fry the ESC?

Usually 7 cells presents too much voltage for the BEC to transform into a usable voltage for the receiver. It will provide too much voltage to the receiver, blowing it and letting all the magic smoke out.

You will find that the BEC smokes before the receiver bites the dust. This can cause problems with the ESC. For a more reliable ie less glitching and better range a stand alone BEC or a good receiver pack are a better opyion. Good luck and I hope your boats get faster

+1 on magic smoke. And like andym said it helps with the glicthing. If your 7 cell batts arent all that new you may be riding the fine line of its okay newer 7 cell batts might do you in just when you are having fun so be careful.

Steven .Could the type of reciever have some effect when glitching or the smoke occur?
I have been using a DSM reciever with 7 cells and havent had that problem so far...

A better rx wil mostly likely stop glitching, but not help from overloading the bec. But there is no definite right or wrong way. So far people have had both ways work and not work.

If you are going to use external batteries or a UBEC it is a wise practice to remove the red wire & pin from the receiver plug on the ESC. Otherwise there are two different voltages being supplied to the receiver rails. They don't like that either. But also the BEC in the ESC is still activated from the 14 cells & getting hot & causing the original problem unless the red wire is disconnected.
