How do you round the rudder for speed and handling?

Take a Dremmel tool to it with the sanding stone. The bottom of the leading edge is were I round mine off. If you need pics of mine....let me know.

I haven't tried both one after the other on the same boat to find out but by looking at it I don't see how the rounded leading edge is less drag, to me it looks like rounding it bluntens the leading edge making more drag, producing lift and probably stopping the area if the rudder behind the blunt section from working.

Actually, the flat bottom of a rudder creates lift...rounding relieves the lift.

I round of my rudders both sides so theirs no flat area on the bottom at all, As has already been mentioned it reduces lift. Martin.

Here is what I have found.

Rounding the bottom removes the riding surface. I do this on all boats regardless of the type.

Rounding the leading edge to bottom (we call this knifing the blade) making a radii from the leading edge to the bottom creates lift in the corners.. the higher up you make the radii the more lift.

Its kind of like filing the leading edge back.. not all that desirable on most air suspended hulls.

In most cases this is BAD on a mono but can be used to tune a Hydros cornering speed.

                      Not sure this helps..

                      Sorry I don’t have a pic..

Ahh its knifing that I was talking about, just never heard that term used for it.

Its nice to see the light bulb go off like that.

You are well on your way!

Here is an example of the rudder on my SV27. All of my hardware is custom built but the idea is the same on any rudder.
