Detox, what is AOA and how would you modify it?

Angle Of Attack is the angle at which your sponsons attack the water WHILE RUNNING ON WATER. The UL-1 has what some say is excessive or too much angle (boat is flighty or loose even with the lower powered UL-1 motor/esc power). Rest your boat on setup board with bottom of strut resting on surface also. Look at how much the sponsons angle upwards toward front of boat. You want a little upwards angle, but less is best for a tighter running race boat (boat will be more stable and less flighty in race water). It would be difficult to change chage AOA of UL-1 without removing sponson bottom, but it can be done with LOTS of thought. There is a sweat spot.

On setup board with the boat resting on strut (strut adjusted 1" below hull) and sponsons, take a piece of 1/16 ply and slide it back under the sponson until it touches the ride surface. Measure the distance from where the ply touches to the Tale End of the sponson. You will notice the UL-1 has about 7/8" (I think). Shoot for about a 1.3" measurement if sponsons are modified.

Raising the strut (mine is set 1 3/16") will have some effect on AOA and make boat run tighter. Along with adding more weight in the correct places...usually up front.

Remember a wet or tighter running boat is a hotter running boat. Sometimes this will be harder on the ESC and Motor.

How do I loosen up a boat?

My MM runs tight. my motor and esc get very warm..

COG or Strut Angle maybe. I know nothing about Cats and very very little about Hydros.

I have a sprint cat which is very similar to the Mean machine. COG should be about 9.5" up from the transom. You should be able to adjust your COG with your lipos by moving them forward or back in the sponsons. Your mm should run on the last 3"-6" of the sponsons.
