Andrew Gilchrest at Fast electrics is a good bloke just make sure you have time for a Loooong call. He has some good upgrades for the BJ and I believe has one well over 50mph.
G'day all

hmmmmmmmmm well i've been looking online all night at different types of boats and have come to this conclusion. bugger.
I like the BJ, but I dont like the steering outdrive setup, it looks cheap and nasty plastic which has turned me off. The supervee 27 is nice but pricey. I also like the formula fastech brushless, mainly as the rudder section is metal and seperate from the prop, although the paint scheme is Miami Vice. The UL-1 looks like it belongs on the moon.
hmmmm this is going to take awhile, but so far the contenders are SV27 or the Fastech BL.
So after looking around I couldnt believe there are only really two companies (PB and AQ) that make any decent RTRS. So i'm open to any ideas of kits etc. I like the scale (ish) look and am not after anything to break records, just a fun boat for now but saying that maybe a fastech is that. Its doing my head in. bollocks.Comment

Hi Mike.
Have a look around this site. They are in Adelaide & have some good setups & accessories. Something may take your fancy & postage should be reasonable to Perth.
Cheers.

That is why the Scots and Kiwis like their sheep. We are in command.
Mash13 some of the guys on this site are a bit weird. If you have any concerns PM Uncle Douggie. Suprisinlgy enough the weird ones seem to know a bit about FE boating.

Im loving my fastech heres a few vids on 5S.... and here is a few things i popped down on a thread somewhere...
This is only my opinion but the fastech seems the kiddie rather than the BJ....
I will add i had problems with the stock ESC running the online BEC and setting the timing to high on 5s 18.v i blew it.... im now running it with a cheap watercooled hobbywing seaking 90a ESC that takes upto 6s with a super bec.... its pretty sweet. I dont have the balls just yet to even try 6s.... Dont bother with running 2x 7.2 nimhs its just not cutting it... 4s isnt too bad neither for run of the mill bashing but you really need to be looking for 5 or 6s if you want rip snorting speed on a knifes edge... them vids i was running with a 3s on one side and a 2s on the other without balancing it up or triming the mother... 1st 1 is with the new ESC running how it came and the other the stock esc the used the programming card to set nimh and high timing... Just make sure you make the bec redundant by remving the red wire and plugging up a 6v RX pack if your going to run any more than 4s
OLD QUOTE from myself...
I went to buy the BJ but found the item sold just before i got to the shop.. Was not happy having to walk out the shop with the fastech under my arm... Until i got down to the nitty gritty and done a whole lot of ready on both boats. Seems the fastech requires far less modding than the BJ.
For the extra $ you are basically paying for the sturdy alu running gear (BJ is plastic or composite) and the attention to detail on the scale looks. IMO a much more stable are thought out hull ok ok i know it has a huge flat pad and the turn fins to stabilize but it does work well out of the box. I see people pushing 50mph with lipo upgrades and very little change to running gear or hull etc. Even down to the layout and setup on the internals of the hull its seems a much better setup than the BJ.
Im now convinced ive walked out the shop with the correct purchase and pretty much stoked. I 1stly bought a killer V for £60 and then stepped up to the fastech £175 (in the after christmas sales) and the performance and value for money factor REALLY shows.
Only gripe i have is the programing card NOT being supplied as part of the RTR kit. Ive had esc problems in the power keep cutting out under load on nimhs (of which i believe is how the esc is programmed stock) Lots of people having this issue and re-programming the ESC seems to fix the issue so its almost a necesity to have. (since then i have learned thanks to the forum you can actually get round this by holding full throttle whilst connecting up the batteries. Took me 3 attempts but did indeed fix the problem).
Only other thing i would have liked to have seen is a radio-less version. That 27mhz system isnt really worth putting in the kit if like most who shell out this much cash on a boat already have and own a decent radio system. I just dont see this boat at this kinda price appeal to the complete begginer. It certaimly wouldnt and wasnt my 1st choice for purchase.Comment

Welcome to the wonderfull world of RC boating
You'll find a ton of useful information here
The first 2 boats at the ebay store on the above site would be your best choice for the $$ you want to spent, and the best thing is they are an easy upgrade to better motor and more speed when you feel the need. Most guys here have built that ype of mono so can help you out if need be, me included. Shame you li8ve on the other side of the world to us east coaster's lol Our club holds the only all electric national race meet every year with attendants of 20+ boaters from up and down the east coast. Check out the AMPBA forum http://www.ampba.asn.au/forum/index.php as well you might find some guys in WA that are running electric..
Hope this helps alittle

Cheers for all the help and welcome guys, much appreciated. Ozboater, Bunbury is a great spot, I race elec touring cars down there every now and then!
I've been checking out those boats on the ebay site, but I think I prefer the 1/12th miss elam. i've been looking at it for ages now and after reading somewhat through the other thread linked above, believe that it would suit me better. Now all ive gotta do is find a shop thats not a rip off.Comment

Hey Mike,
I think it would be cheaper to import all the parts and build your own hydro for what it will cost you to buy and import a miss elam if you can't find a local stockist. I know 1 guys in our club was looking at the UL1 but the cost of postage from the US was just as much as the boat itself. Just my 2 cents :)

Hi Heath,
Yeah it does all depend on price and availability, I have a proboat stockist nearby so they are going to find out cost etc for me. I have seen a few pics of your skunkworks cat, and that is an awesome looking rig. When you say import and build, is this the quality that you were mentioning? If that was going to be my path then I wouldnt know where to start or what to get. What sort of price whould be realistic?
If its too pricey, I might go with http://cgi.ebay.com.au/fibreglass-br...QQcmdZViewItem
or
What do you guys think of the above two?
Do these look ok? I dont know what to look for really so its a pain. I do like the look of the catLast edited by Mash13; 03-09-2009, 07:53 AM.Comment

I would go for the mono in those links, only because you have room to upgrade to a faster setup ie Neu 1515 1 y motor Hydra 120 or better & 4s lipo. If you can get the Elam for a good price then thats the way to go. I just worked out that with todays exchange rate my cat to build from scratch would cost $1100 without radio equipment..
Thanks for the compliment on my cat :)
