    Carbon or Carbon/Kevlar?

Does anybody know what are the advantages-disadvantages of these two materials?
Which is one is stronger and more rigid?
I see that most reinforcements in hulls is done with carbon fiber cloths, what about the carbon/kevlar?
    Thanks.

Carbon is much ligther and "flexible" than Kevlar (Aramide fiber), Kevlar is a lot more rigid.

I'm not sure if kevlar is more rigid, we have a kevlar canoe and it flexes quite a bit when we hit rocks etc......

Carbon is only strong in the lenght of the fibre.
In case of side impact, it snaps.

That's why there are combined cloth's ( carbon and kevlar woven into 1 cloth )

as far as I know it is flexible but much less than carbon, this is due to the fact that Kevlar is more resistant in traction or compression, reason why it is used to make charge handling strap with Kevlar.

What do you guys think about this Kevlar?

I have a bunch of it. Its strong as hell and super light too! I planned on using it in my Whiplash build for added strength.

Unless your using different wood than was was supplied in the kit from Brian, you don't need to add any strength. There is plenty of strenght in that hull.... just my $.02

Some H&M hulls have carbon/kevlar reinforcement. I think the carbon is strong and flexible and the kevlar is stronger but less flexible therefore the combination of the two gives more strength and less flexibility than the carbon itself.

                  Thanks Mike!

I relate this to my co-builder and discuss. The piece we were looking at using is only 1.5oz in weight and would add a cool factor to the inside, or at least we think so...

After a quick search I realized I was wrong, Kevlar is lighter than carbon, density is 1.45 as it is 1.7-1.8 for carbon fiber. I had in mind a sample that a friend made 20 years ago on a hudge RC gaz cigarette... that was 20 years ago!

                      Guys.

Carbon is stiffer than kevlar. End of story.

But when you mention strength, then kevlar would have to win because of it's extreme durability and and the fact that is still flexes upon impact.

Use carbon for stiffness, Kevlar for toughness (impact resistance).

OK, I'm not going to weigh in either way, but I'll say this much:

I'm in favor of the cool factor! Plus you'll never know how it turns out until you try it

By the way, don't read my signature with this post, LOL!

Sounds like experience maybe? Please share if so...

The red and black weave is beautiful versus all black carbon. I may have to paint her red after, but I think silver will work.

I have a couple of kevlar 21 sized dv hulls. Made by bandit. Very light.
