    Really Nice Prop Balancer -

    Guys,

In case anyone is looking for a decent prop balancer, I found this one from Kintec Racing that REALLY is an excellent value. I can't believe it's only $35.00 (plus another $6.00 for the 1/8th shaft if needed)... It's precisely made, the shaft is SUPER true, and it's a nice, compact unit that can be easily taken with you to the lake.

There is also a 1/4" shaft available. I forgot to measure to see what the max diameter prop it can handle would be, but it will easily do at least up to a 60mm, which is big enough for anything I need to do. It may do larger. I'll measure it tonight when I get home and follow up on that.

I'm very happy with it and thought that others might be interested in knowing about these. Definately a huge step up from the modified Top Flite Power Point Balancer I've been using...

I was asked to post the link to the specific page on the website where I found the balancer. It's under the "Super V 27 Upgrades" link currently, here: http://www.kintecracing.com/Supervee_27_upgrades.html

I sent an e-mail to the owner of the site suggesting that he put in a "Prop" or "Tools" section so this stuff might be easier to find... Quality like this should be readily accessible!!

Thanks Darin. I ordered one today to replace my Top Flite balancer. Just what I have been looking for...no cones and a true shaft

Thanks from me too! I hate the stupid top flite piece o junk. Even with specially tailored rods, still sucks. Got mine ordered for the shop season (they are ice fishing on my ponds!)

One simple solution to both issues, Doug. Use a drill bit of the appropriate diameter, sharpened to a point rather than a chisel.

Damn it Andy. Why do you have to simplify the issue

I have precision ground 1/8" and 3/16" shafts as Andy describes, but they don't fix the fact that the Top Flite unit is plastic and the magnets are very rarely parallel with each other. I've done the best I can to compensate, but let's face it... we're trying to use a balancer designed to balance airplane props to do boat props... The Kintec unit is just what the doctor ordered for my needs...

How do non-parallel magnets cause a problem? (This I gotta hear!)

My props don't change rotary position if I hold the magnets by hand and twist them off parallel in any direction, or change them vertically. My props are BeCu and are therefore non-magnetic.

Andy, I think Darin has a wee bit of egg on his face, but at very least he pointed us to a new interesting product.

Egg on my face?? Think about it guys...

Has nothing to do with the props being magnetic or not... If the magnets aren't parallel, and at the same level, then the centers of those magnets are not aligned, nor are the magnetic fields, and the shaft will NOT stay in the center. One end or the other will wander around, or the shaft will not be level, etc.... as the tip of the shaft hunts around for the center of the magnet nearest it... Might still balance, but not repeatably, at least not enough for me. I wouldn't say this if I hadn't experienced it...

Still... as Tony has expressed above, I'm able to get props perfectly balanced, but it's not nearly as precise a piece of equipment as I like to work with, especially for smaller props.
