Cleaning out ESC smoke smell from hull

    Hey guys

Earlier today, a good friend of mine had a Dynamite 45A brushless ESC melt down in a rather smoky mess in his Shockwave 26 BL V3. Note this is the previous release of this boat. This is not the current green version. The only upgrade this boat has is the 2000kv motor from the current Shockwave 26/Blackjack 24. The prop used is the stainless steel version of the stock prop.

The water cooling was working properly and was not clogged.

This is my very first experience with the "magic smoke" and trying to clean up the aftermath. Man, that stuff is smelly AND messy.

Luckily there is no damage to the hull other than the smell of course and the brown crud that is stained all over everything. I would like to know the best way to clean this crap out.

I tested the motor and the motor appears to still be good so I think a new ESC should get him up and running again.

ESCs fail for many reasons, in no particular order:

      - extensive running at part throttle
      - too high a Kv motor
      - running pack after pack without a cooldown period between
      - too much prop
      - very high quality packs (for RTRs)
      - poor connectors (corroded, etc.)
      - drive line binding/poor lube
      - got wet
      - faulty ESC.

Some brake cleaners will cause some plastics to turn brittle. Ditto with oven cleaners, and both are toxic. Denatured alcohol is cheap, safe and it works. It will take generous and multiple applications, I prefer to use old sponges to apply. No matter what you use, there will always be a very slight odor remaining - to remind you of what you did wrong (if you did anything).

Great to know, thanks. I can get denatured alcohol where I work.

This ESC was about 3 years old with numerous runs on it. I guess time just caught up with it. I would imagine that is a good life span for a high powered electronic component such as an ESC.

I had bought a boat last summer that had smoke damage and after cleaning it out brushed a little fiberglass resin in the hull. It smelled better then the burnt stuff.

Sure was. Took me by surprise.

I can still smell a bit of it on my patio, even now 2 days later where the boat is being kept until we get it running again.
