Stepped Sponsons on Hydros and Angle of Attack?

    Just trying to understand something.

This diagram is highly exaggerated, but it seems the faster you go, the further back the boat would ride, thereby decreasing the angle of attack at higher speeds. The higher angle of attack at low/mid speed would make it easier to plane....essentially the same concept as a recovery pad.

Is this what stepped sponsons of this nature/direction are used for?

If I was building a hydro/rigger a good place to start is 7 degrees on the AOA. I am not really sure how to answer your question though.

My riggers work pretty well with 4 to 5 degrees AOA.

Take a look at my album on the build of your hull.

That is what has worked best for me when racing.

Now if you want to try SAW runs - it may be a lot different.

Are you guys talking about the recovery pad AOA? Those numbers seem high for a ride pad or bottom. I think the Pearl ride pads are at 2-3deg.

Anyways, what I was trying to figure out was the purpose of the steps. Seems the boat would ride further and further back as it planes out. If you have steps, you are essentially dropping the nose further down and thereby changing the bottom AOA as it rides further back.
