daveives: Have you tried connecting it to your computer and fiddling with their software/firmware first? I'd imagine that would be where you would do it.

I originally bought the one from Kintec, but it has very difficult to use and if you accidentally switch off the power before saving the readings, you lose that data, which happened a lot.
I luckily found this model on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...rch_detailpage
It's popular with sailboarders. It has a water resistance IPX6 level on it, though I would not stick it outside your boat without a plastic bag assuming you have a fully carbon fiber boat, but it does a great job inside the boat (even with some level of carbon reinforcement) and can survive quite a bit of water, just not fully submerged for an extended period of time.
It comes with an internal battery, charged with a USB connector, and last for a very long time, its small, easy to use, and pretty cheap.Comment

As for waterproofing... Don't worry about it. Mine took a 68 mph crash strapped to the outside and spent about 10 minutes on the bottom of the river. Garmin did a good job on the 201.
Here's a video.
