    how large of a hole in the transom for rudder linkage?

    hi guys, I'm setting my linkage up (using welding rod) and the hole is constricting the throw of my rudder - - wondering how large of a hole everybody uses? Thanks

    You need to keep the water out I use a 3/8 hOLe and insert a Aeromarine radio box seal, to keep the water out I also for the most part use 4/40 size control rods I have seal here and I am sure OSE hgas some on there site good luck Chris

      I usually glue in a piece of 1/4" brass tube & use a bellows seal over that with a small cable tie around it . That gives a decent size hole for the push rod to change angle without binding, as the servo & tiller arms travel through their arcs.

        Same way I do. If you line up the servo correctly, the amount the rod needs to go "wiggle" is not that much and the brass tube can act as a guild as well, as long as the rubbing/binding is not too much. ( worst case scenario).
        Too many boats, not enough time...

          No need for brass tubing when using a Radio box seal. ???????????? KISS !!! Being that I am a old school guy, I still build today without any Metal to Metal contact the Old 75 Hertz radios would glich with any M to M contact ,, at all ! Please explain to me why you use the brass ?

            Mainly for the reason that the OP wanted. A bigger hole in the transom to take up the changing angle of the push rod. But obviously a straight rod is better. But if the rudder tiller arm is close to the transom (as I've had in some boats) the rod can easily get jammed to the side of the hole st full rudder throw. Plus the boots are easier to replace when they split.

            Old habits are hard to shake aren't they. Even though you know that 2.4 gig won't be affected by any metal to metal contact/vibration.

              Like you said straight rods are the best and the rubber does gives no need for that much rudder travel 35-40* total degrees is all need.. anyway to each hin own , LOL on the old habits !!! I do own a bunch or 2.4 radios also LOL

                  Depending on how much room you have to work with and how strong is the transom the bigger the hole for me. I like to be able to pull my heavy duty ball links threw. 1/2" hole on this one :)

                      Thanks everybody, very helpful and great information - I'm using 1/8 welding rod threaded with the rod chuck (works great) to 4-40 (http://www.rodchuck.com). I have a traxxas boot which seems too small for the 1/8 rod, I will have to get an aeromarine one. I wasn't sure what size hole to drill, thanks for the tips...my hole was too small.

                      Rearwheelin - what do you use to keep water out of there?

                          I use a finger from a latex glove . You can double up two fingers. Zip tie or safety wire .

                            Many moons ago when I still used to run only nitro we used part of a baby bottle nipple with brass tubing. The funky bellows were not widely available, before the days of the internet when you made do with what the LHS had in stock or waited for him to order specific parts.
                            If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?
