Just like the title says. All I see posted is how fast will my boat go? Add more cells 70mph, 80 mph even higher. Doesn't anyone take time to massage more speed on a standard set-up? Does anyone actually run a boat for more than a few seconds? Like for 2 to 4 minutes at 50-60mph?

    Is oval racing dead?

This is like saying Drag race cars do not measure up to Road race cars ... or the other way around. Everyone has there need for speed and satisfies it one way or another. Its all about the chase and for a "guy" its the top speed that gets him going in my opinion. Good times!
PT-45, 109mph, finally gave up after last bad crash
    H&M 1/8 Miss Bud 73 mph
    Chris Craft 16 mph

I've been pecking away at mine. Might not be what your into but it's a rush making some speed passes and then tweaking this and that to get that extra mph. Everyone has thier thing they like. You might like to run a round a circle for numerous laps and get dizzy (see what I did there lol) and some may get a rush from making a couple super fast passes. Everyone is different you know. Don't beat us up because it ain't your thing. :)

My friend and I bring SAW boats and oval boats. The best days are the ones when we take the time to bring all of em.

--a bunch of mhz cats, vac-pickles, 20yr old prather tunnel hulls, nothing beats running SAW boats then finishing the day up with two tunnel hulls and hydros. They're all fun and I would have gotten bored awhile back if I only built narrow cats.

Our pond is not long enough to go for long fast runs so we just run in circles :)

As long as folks are enjoying the FE hobby safely, I don't care how they run their boats.

I enjoy it all, but have to admit to the " Need For Speed '' syndrome ...pushing a hull to its limits is my favorite....each to their own fun...DJ

Howard, I like pushing mine up in speed while doing the oval and usually 4min runs. It does get tough over 60 especially in the summer.

I feel your pain Howard. I wonder some times if the down and back guys would dig racing if they had a chance to hang out with some roundy round morons like us. The fun is infectious if done correctly. I also wonder if I had no roundy round fools to hang with if I would be throwing in my GPS and crushing a million RPM into the water to chase that top speed. Probably would. The top speed guys don't even have to go to a time trial to get their top speed fix. We could argue about the accuracy of the GPS but they're really only racing against their last best run so who cares if it's accurate?

I haven't GPS'd a boat in a couple seasons now. I just don't care. If it looks fast and I can still drive it that's close enough.

As silly as it sounds, I think FE is still suffering some growing pains. FE racing that is. There are so many choices. Not just classes but types of racing. Organized racing could be SAW, sprints, offshore, scale, tunnels, cats, twin cats, .....blah blah blah. Million choices. Getting more than two guys focused on one type of boat can be tough.

To make racing happen on a local level it takes really only a handful of guys to stir the pond. The only way to do it is to pick a short list of classes and agree to stick to them. Something mid level fast. Can't be a snore fest. Just three guys having fun will make other guys want to share the fun. Help anyone new with their boats until they can beat you. Even if it means handing them your prop and making yourself a new one. When they start to get it you turn them loose on the next batch of new guys.

Once those take off, mix in some higher performance stuff for those guys with more experience. Not P limited mono and open mono. You need a high performance class that mortals can graduate to. Resist the urge to pull out of the mid level classes as you gain experience. Ball and I are both running SV this summer. The new guys are chasing us too. I'm not the fastest SV guy but when a newer guy catches and beats us.............priceless.

and this is what our group is trying to accomplish. Dang I miss the Puget Sound racing, what a rush. Just can't get down there anymore.

I've never gps'd a boat. The one time I tried it didn't work so I wasn't impressed. I feel the same way. After I ended up a para from road racing motorcycles, I needed an adrenaline release and FE boating got me at one hobby show. I already had my AVL Gen 2 in build process 1/16th scale'ish and I started talking to a guy from OFEC a splinter group from MMM in Toronto. The rest is history, I loved the jockeying for the start counting down that clock trying to be the first one over the line... One day I'll upload a picture I have to scan of me standing up holding my first balsa sport hydro. Years later the bottom fell out of FE oval racing in Southern Ontario and it's trying to make a comeback and I thank all that are working hard and trying to find good ponds we can turn ovals and whatever else. Some of us like SAW, and just fun running but, ovals are a rush that is different I think and if you haven't tried it, maybe it's a good time to try? I ramble...
