Yeah some oil can make smoke I think. I'm pretty sure it's happened to me before.
I never oil my motors anymore and never have an issue

            The motor has failed.
If the stator looked ok the failure probably occurred where the wires enter the can, it happens.

How hot was the motor when you saw smoke? More important is to look at the lacquer on the copper winding, if ther are discolored or seems to have "melted", then it's gone. When lacquer is being cooked it can have some smoke and a burnt smell. How are the three wires coming out of the motor? i.e., condition of the insulation.
Oil could give smoke, but on a BL motor you should never see spark.
Too many boats, not enough time...

brake cleaner entire motor. reassembled and test ran. by the way, motor never got hot. when tested after cleaning , no sparking, but small amount of smoke coming out endbell. guess i need to buy new motor. does T.P. make a direct replacement for the leopard 4082 1600 kv? same bolt patterns and size. ?

                    I'm running a fightercat daytona 37" cat with a hobbywing 180 on 6-s. after toasting this 4082, I have 4 choices 1.) buy a new 4082 1600 kv 2.) use a 4082 2000kv i have on 6-s 3.) run the 4082 2000kv on 4 or 5 -s. 4.) buy a T.P. 4050 (seems to be a direct bolt-in )

by the way, would running this boat on 4 or 5-s give decent speed and longer run times than 6-s ?

Did you first see smoke after applying brake cleaner? I ask because I am curious for my own knowledge. I wonder if the chemical weakened the lacquer.
I recently toasted a brand new Aqua Craft 1800kv motor. I put it in my Miss Geico and after the first minute or so, I brought her back just to check temp, I saw smoke when I opened the lid, also smelled burnt odor but I thought it was the bearing oil which I put a bit too much. Second time out it died within 100ft. Motor was burned , it was the wires entering the endbell that somehow shorted. The boat had run Proboat's 1800kv motor without any problem. I replaced with a Leopard 4074/2000kv which I had for a while, so far real happy. Sorry...drifting...as usual...
These bolt patterns are all the same. I would not go beyond 5s on your 2000kv motor. I run a Leopard 4082/2000kv on 4s2p and it's plenty fast, good run time.

Or you could get a castle 1515 2200kv and have a better motor than all you listed. Run it on 4s for close to the same speeds you have. 5s to go faster and 6s (only with an x442 or x642 prop) to make a couple really fast passes. Don't run 6s on it often tho and for long. It's alot of load but that motor and esc will handle it in moderation.
